This adjustment converted a [small loft apartment](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brooklyn-loft) into spacious oasis. Lynda and Peter Benoit of Melander Architects were given the assignment of remodeling a small California loft apartment. The apartment (located in a former steam engine factory) is 1,100 sq ft in size. The designers created a [custom 16x17x10 ft box](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/boxed-collection) made of wood that accommodates a bedroom on the inside, a [large bookshelf on the outside](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chunks-and-blocks) and a beautiful dressing room on top, complete with an office. This is easily any loft owners dream situation, a place to put the bulk of your possessions while still leaving plenty of room for living. The photos speak for themselves on the true artistry of this apartment. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.7/10 - Popularity: 97% | Activity: 95% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Space Optimization:** The 'Box-Within-A-Box' design maximizes living space by creating custom compartments for belongings, allowing for efficient use of limited space. - **Multifunctional Furniture:** The inclusion of a large bookshelf that doubles as a wall and a beautiful dressing room that serves as an office highlights the trend of furniture with multiple functions. - **Loft Living:** The renovation of the California loft apartment showcases the growing trend of urbanites choosing to live in open, industrial-style spaces. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Interior Design:** The interior design industry can leverage the trend of space optimization by developing innovative storage solutions and multifunctional furniture designs. - **Real Estate:** Real estate developers can capitalize on the trend of loft living by repurposing industrial buildings and marketing them as stylish, open-concept living spaces. - **Home Organization:** The home organization industry has an opportunity to create innovative storage solutions that optimize space and cater to the needs of individuals living in compact urban environments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Smartly Designed Compact Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/compact-apartments2.md) - [Remodelled Denim-Detailed Modern Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/microloft.md) - [Renovated Compact Loft Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vessel-project.md) - [Reimagined Minimal Parisian Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-cocoon.md) - [Cleverly Designed Micro Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cabanon.md) - [Contemporary Spacious Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crossfold-loft.md) - [NYC Apartment Renovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brooklyn-loft.md) - [Compact Calming Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-sheltered-space.md) - [Compact Madrid Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/burr-studio-1.md)
