# Vertically Stacked Abodes The Barcode House Mimics the Aesthetic of a Merchandise Computer Code By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-07-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-barcode-house References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2014/07/13/the-barcode-house-by-david-jameson-architect/) & [davidjamesonarchitect](http://www.davidjamesonarchitect.com/) David Jameson Architect designed the [Barcode House](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/oopen) in Washington, D.C. With this project, the architects sought to explore the relationships between heavy and light, as well as between old and new. The fragile masonry walls of the [existing row house](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/curtain-house) dictated that the additional space had to be a freestanding structure. The site also created certain challenges that required the home to be oriented vertically. Complying with the client's wishes, the architects created an [additional transparent living space](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glassbrick-apartment). This objective allowed for an integrated design that complemented the home's lateral constraints. The additional living space is anchored to the row house by way of a stucco circulation. The finished project features steel rods and a glass window wall, adding a modern appeal to the home. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.7/10 - Popularity: 2% | Activity: 11% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Vertical Living:** Opportunity to design and build vertically stacked homes for efficient use of space and optimal urban living. - **Mixed Materials:** Innovative use of masonry, steel rods, and glass window walls to create visually striking architectural designs. - **Integration of Old and New:** Exploring the juxtaposition of historical row houses with modern, transparent living spaces. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture:** Architects can embrace the trend of vertical living and mixed materials to create unique and visually appealing designs. - **Construction:** Opportunity for construction companies to specialize in building vertically stacked homes that maximize space utilization. - **Real Estate:** Real estate developers can capitalize on the demand for integrated old and new spaces by revitalizing historical buildings with modern additions. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Slender Alley Dwelling Revivals](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brown-house-1.md) - [Compact Residential Additions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/henville-street-house.md) - [Spacially Contrasting Home Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/barwon-heads-house.md) - [Contemporary Stacked Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/everden-residence.md) - [Gridded Urban Apartment Blocks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/la-carboneria.md) - [Textured Brick London Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nw10.md) - [Compact Calming Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-sheltered-space.md) - [Steel Facade-Wrapped Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bomun-house.md) - [Concrete Boxes-Overlapping Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-in-tsurumiku.md)
