# Painfully Thorny Seats The Terrible Chair by Michele Oka Doner is Fit for an Evil Queen By Meghan Young | Published 2013-11-27 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/terrible-chair References: [bookofjoe](http://www.bookofjoe.com/2013/11/terrible-chair-michele-oka-doner.html) & [larcobaleno](http://www.larcobaleno.com/shop/terrible-chair.html) The Terrible Chair looks like a throne fit for Maleficent, the Evil Queen of 'Sleeping Beauty' fame. As thorny as the rose bushes she magically grows around the princess' castle to seal her in, the Terrible Chair looks pretty...terrible. It wasn't designed by the witchy villain, however. Instead Michele Oka Doner, an artist and designer based in Miami and New York, created the Terrible Chair. As written on L'Arco Baleno, "The legend goes that [she] chanced upon a [thorny branch](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ceiba-series) one day and got the notion to domesticate its menacing, untamed beauty." Intriguingly enough, the Terrible Chair is in fact fashioned out of real thorn bushes. Although it resembles a [functional piece of furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/uncomfortable-table), only the truly brave (or cursed) would ever recline in its seat. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.6/10 - Popularity: 32% | Activity: 37% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Thorny Furniture:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation in creating furniture designs that incorporate unconventional materials and elements like thorn bushes. - **Fantasy-inspired Design:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation in the field of design by creating furniture pieces that are inspired by fictional worlds and characters. - **Eco-friendly Furniture:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation in the furniture industry by utilizing sustainable and natural materials like thorn bushes. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity for furniture manufacturers to explore new materials and design elements like thorn bushes to create unique and unconventional furniture pieces. - **Art and Design:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation in the art and design field by incorporating fantasy-inspired elements into functional furniture designs. - **Sustainable Living:** Disruptive innovation opportunity for the sustainable living industry to promote furniture made from eco-friendly materials like thorn bushes as a unique and environmentally conscious option. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Exquisite AI-Designed Thrones](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/throne-design.md) - [Sea Creature-Inspired Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/seat-urchin.md) - [Insect-Like Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-mantis-chair.md) - [Sprouting Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wood-chair-on-grass.md) - [Historic Dynamic Cane Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/charu-chair.md) - [Rope-Like Dynamic Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/caterpillar-lounge.md) - [Chaotically Natural Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kkochgalam-chair.md) - [Ceramic Chess Seating Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chair-chess.md) - [Celestial Silkscreened Armchairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vanity-fair-xc-armchair.md)
