# Modern Tarot Typography Anton Shlyonkin Gives Tarot Cards a Modern Typed Redesign By Alyson Wyers | Published 2013-08-13 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tarot-cards References: [designtaxi](http://designtaxi.com/news/359907/Designer-Gives-A-Deck-Of-Tarot-Cards-A-Typographic-Makeover/) & [behance.net](http://www.behance.net/gallery/Type-Tarot-deck/8104353) [Tarot cards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flowerlore-collection) have been used to predict people's fortunes since the 15th century. Typically, the cards depict a character of whatever the card's name is. For example, the Wizard would feature a Merlin-esque portrait. However, Russian designer Anton Shlyonkin decided to redo the [prophetic playing cards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wizard-of-oz-tarot) to reveal typography instead. Due to their symbolic nature, Shlyonkin saw this as quite the undertaking. He explained, "The Lovers is a Gemini ruling card. So, to express its dual nature, I made an ambigram." At the same time, he also took some creative liberties with the [tarot cards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/agatha-all-along-2). The Force, for example, has a decidedly 1980s science fiction film feel. Shlyonkin custom designed every letter particularly for this project. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.1/10 - Popularity: 39% | Activity: 46% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 10% men, 90% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Typography in Tarot:** Integrating typography into tarot card designs presents an opportunity for a modern and visually striking interpretation of the cards. - **Symbolic Redesign:** Redefining the traditional imagery of tarot cards through symbolic and typographic representations opens up new possibilities for self-expression and personal meaning. - **Ambigram Artistry:** Exploring ambigrams as a design element in tarot cards introduces an innovative way to capture duality and create engaging visual experiences. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art and Design:** Artists and designers can leverage the modern tarot typography trend to redefine visual storytelling and create unique products that resonate with contemporary audiences. - **Psychic Services:** Psychic service providers can embrace the symbolic redesign of tarot cards to enhance their offerings and provide clients with fresh interpretations and experiences. - **Printing and Manufacturing:** Printing and manufacturing companies can explore new markets and revenue streams by catering to the demand for custom-designed tarot cards that feature typography and innovative symbolism. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Augmented Reality Tarot Cards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/google-tarot-cards.md) - [Self-Discovery Card Decks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tarot-of-oxalia.md) - [Tarot-Inspired Phone Cases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tarotinspired-phone-case.md) - [Content Creator Tarot Cards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tarot-with-youtube.md) - [Magician-Designed Playing Cards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mystery-playing-cards.md) - [AI Tarot Insights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/taroteller.md) - [Cartoon-Inspired Tarot Decks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hello-kitty-tarot.md) - [Playful Font-Associated Personalities](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/adobe-acrobat.md) - [Digital Tarot Platforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/taroternity.md)
