# Counterbalanced Bookshelves The 'ODDLY' Table Bookshelf Uses a Wooden Ball to Keep Books in Place By Michael Hemsworth | Published 2017-04-20 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/table-bookshelf References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/bookshelf-design-uses-a-wood-ball-to-keep-books-in-place/) & [behance.net](https://www.behance.net/youngmiiin) Bookshelves often keep books propped up and held in place with a [bookend](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wicked-bookend), but the 'ODDLY' table bookshelf takes things in a decidedly different direction. Designed by Youngmin Kang, the 'ODDLY' bookshelf incorporates a see-saw-like aesthetic that incorporates a wooden ball in order to keep literature in place. The angled aesthetic of the 'ODDLY' bookshelf enables it to push the wooden ball onto the stacked books at all times to keep them delicately in place without toppling over. The design of the table bookshelf incorporates the aforementioned wooden ball along with a [painted wire frame](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tong-side-table) that keeps the ball and books in place. The playful design of the 'ODDLY' bookshelf makes it a suitable piece of decor for the home or office. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.6/10 - Popularity: 66% | Activity: 35% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **See-saw Design:** Designing products with see-saw aesthetics can offer unique solutions to existing problems and create new markets. - **Innovative Book Storage:** Reimagining the way books are stored and displayed can provide an innovative edge to furniture design. - **Playful Home Decor:** Designing playful and functional home decor can be a hit with consumers looking for unique design solutions. ### Who This Affects Most - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Incorporating innovative designs and unique functionality can elevate furniture to more than a mundane necessity. - **Home Decor:** Playful and functional design options can entice a new market of consumers looking for unique home decor options. - **Interior Design:** Incorporating high-end, creative options like see-saw bookshelves into interior design may attract a more discerning and creative customer base. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Personality-Enhancing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ordo-book.md) - [Book-Storing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookgroove-bookrack.md) - [Compact Functional Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookmarker-table.md) - [Minimally Engineered Bookends](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/firm-book-end.md) - [Twisting CGI-Designed Sideboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookscrew-sideboard.md) - [Sliding Wintery Landscape Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manhwabang-bookshelf.md) - [Bookshelf-Incorporated Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/overlap-table.md) - [Toy Block-Inspired Wooden Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rotating-picture-book.md) - [Book-Shaped Transparent Bookmarks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/transparent-bookmark.md)
