# Schoolhouse-Inspired Seating The Surprise! Chair by Gaspar Gonzalez is Traditionally Basic By Meghan Young | Published 2011-03-22 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surprise-chair References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/surprise-chair/) & [concepta.es](http://concepta.es/eng_surprise.htm) You can't go wrong with simple designs, and the Surprise! Chair boasts just that. A basic piece of furniture, it is inspired by the [cute schoolhouse seats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clever-school-desk1) back in elementary grade schools. Designed by Gaspar González for Concepta, the Surprise! Chair is slightly different from these schoolhouse seats. First of all, they are made to accommodate grown ups rather than pint-sized children. Secondly, they feature [plush cushions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kouros-maghsoudi) to rest your tush on--not only for added comfort, but for an interesting focal point. Available in [vibrant colors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/magnus-olesen), the Surprise! Chair spruces up the basic design neatly and nicely. I think that the Surprise! Chair is especially perfect for kitchens, dens and children's play areas. I should make a special mention of the customized Surprise! Chair cushion by Vasava that features an arrow and bull's eye sheet. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.7/10 - Popularity: 40% | Activity: 2% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Simple Designs:** Exploring simple designs in furniture can lead to disruptive innovation opportunities in terms of functionality and aesthetics. - **Adult-sized Furniture:** Developing furniture designs that are specifically made for grown ups opens up opportunities for creating comfortable and stylish seating solutions. - **Customized Cushions:** The trend of customized cushions presents an opportunity to personalize and add unique elements to otherwise basic furniture designs. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** The furniture design industry can benefit from embracing simple and functional designs that cater to different age groups and customizable elements. - **Interior Design:** Incorporating adult-sized furniture with vibrant colors into interior design schemes can create visually appealing and comfortable spaces. - **Home Decor:** The trend of customized cushions offers a chance for the home decor industry to offer personalized and unique pieces that elevate basic furniture designs. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Structurally Complex Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-arch-chair.md) - [Quirky Postmodern Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-ebba-armchair.md) - [Bungee Cord Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tcord-chair.md) - [Simplistically Shaped Geometric Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sitter-chair.md) - [Sea Creature-Inspired Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/seat-urchin.md) - [Cubic Featherlight Seat Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/please-hold-up-chair.md) - [Unexpected Boundary-Pushing Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atypical-chair.md) - [Playful Toy-Like Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frunchroom-furniture-collection.md) - [Contemporary Rocking Pouffe Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/platero.md)
