# Curvaceous Cupboards The Surface Cabinet by Couture is Sculpturally Calming By Meghan Young | Published 2011-07-13 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surface-cabinet References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2011/07/12/surface-cabinet-by-contour/) & [contour.cc](http://www.contour.cc/) There is something very calming about the Surface Cabinet. From its simple design to its [curving lines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-coffee-tables) and ashy coloring, it really has a zen quality about it. More than that, it also has an artistic presence since its curving details give it a [sculptural look](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cromatica) overall. Created by Swedish designer Jessika Källeskog of CONTOUR, the Surface Cabinet imbued all of these details, and therefore has a three-dimensional aesthetic. I particularly love the contrast between its general boxy shape and the soft wavy door, which undulates forward as well. The resulting bulging shape makes it a serene and harmonic furniture piece for the home. The Surface Cabinet is made out of a [grainy oak veneer](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nick-james). ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.5/10 - Popularity: 51% | Activity: 15% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Sculptural Furniture Design:** A trend towards sculptural furniture designs incorporating curves and unique details. - **Zen-inspired Home Decor:** A trend towards home decor with calming, zen-inspired design elements. - **Three-dimensional Aesthetics:** A trend towards furniture designs with three-dimensional or sculptural aesthetics. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture and Home Decor:** The furniture and home decor industries have an opportunity to incorporate sculptural and three-dimensional design elements into their products. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers can embrace the trend of zen-inspired design to create calming and harmonious spaces. - **Woodworking and Veneer Manufacturing:** Woodworking and veneer manufacturing industries can explore new techniques and materials to create unique and visually appealing designs. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Curvaceous Storage-Packed Sideboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/embrace-sideboard.md) - [Japanese-Inspired Cabinet Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/veil-cabinets.md) - [Nature-Inspired Mesmerizing Sideboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/genipadu-sideboard.md) - [Luxe Grooved Versatile Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cesar.md) - [Modern Curvy Furniture Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/curvy-furniture-design.md) - [Forest-Inspired Wooden Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hayashi-cabinet.md) - [Curved Base Plywood Sideboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-embrace-sideboard.md) - [Thoughtful Wheeling Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cabinet-on-wheels.md) - [Cabinet-Concealed Modern Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/obelisk-3.md)
