# DIY Flame-Throwing Flowers Hackaday Creates a Fire-Breathing Super Mario Piranha Plant By Gil Cohen | Published 2013-05-12 | Updated 2013-05-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/super-mario-piranha-plant References: [presurfer.blogspot](http://presurfer.blogspot.com/2013/05/home-made-fire-breathing-piranha-plant.html) & [hackaday](http://hackaday.com/2013/05/09/6-foot-tall-fire-breathing-piranha-plant-from-super-mario-brothers/) Straight out of the video game, the Super Mario Piranha Plant project from Hackaday is over 6-feet tall and breathes giant balls of fire. Made out of cardboard and foam, it's a wonder this crazy [sculptural creation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gloral-fighter) hasn't combusted into a huge [flower-shaped fire](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ninja-fireside360). Two modes of flame were created: one that shoots fire incredibly high and is for outdoor use only, and another that releases smaller bursts of fire and should probably also remain outdoors. With some background knowledge in flame-throwers and plenty of fire extinguishers on hand, you could create your own [fire-breathing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clean-torch) Super Mario Piranha Plant as the construction itself seems fairly easy to handle and some paint gives it an authentic look. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.9/10 - Popularity: 6% | Activity: 12% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [DIY](https://www.trendhunter.com/diy) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Giant Sculptural Creations:** A trend of creating oversized sculptural creations that combine art and technology, such as the Super Mario Piranha Plant from Hackaday. - **Flame-throwing DIY Projects:** A trend of DIY projects that involve building flame-throwing devices, like the fire-breathing Super Mario Piranha Plant. - **Outdoor Fire Art Installations:** A trend of outdoor art installations that incorporate fire as a dynamic visual element, like the fire-breathing Super Mario Piranha Plant. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art and Entertainment:** The art and entertainment industry could explore the opportunity of creating large-scale interactive art installations that incorporate fire as a visual element, like the Super Mario Piranha Plant. - **DIY and Maker Communities:** The DIY and maker communities could capitalize on the trend of building flame-throwing devices like the Super Mario Piranha Plant, by providing educational resources and safety guidelines for enthusiasts. - **Fire Safety Equipment:** The fire safety equipment industry could benefit from the trend of flame-throwing DIY projects, by offering specialized fire extinguishers and safety gear for hobbyists and makers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Fire-Breathing Toy Figures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jakks-pacific-super-mario-bros-movie.md) - [Video Game Desktop Toys](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nintendo-talking-flower.md) - [DIY LED Flower Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floled.md) - [Video Game Plant-Inspired Cameras](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/piranha-plant-camera.md) - [Indoor Gardening Glowing Petunias](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/firefly-petunia.md) - [Video Game-Inspired Hovercrafts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mario-kart-hovercraft.md) - [Luminescent Mushroom Plant Decor](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lunalite-solar-mushroom-planter-stake.md) - [Gaming Star Toppers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/invincibility-star.md) - [Animated Show-Inspired Butane Torches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/butane-torch.md)
