# Neon Light Swings Artist Su-Mei Tse Uses Illuminated Tubes for Everyday Sculptures By Meghan Young | Published 2013-05-21 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sumei-tse References: [thisiscolossal](http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2013/05/neon-swing-bird-cage-by-su-mei-tse/) & [en.wikipedia.org](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Su-Mei_Tse) Su-Mei Tse, a musician, artist and photographer based in Luxembourg, has created two visually striking sculptures that depict everyday objects. Yet she has transcended them above the ordinary by using a relatively unorthodox material. In place of the traditional rope and wood or plastic for the swing and metal for the birdcage, Su-Mei Tse has fashioned them out of [neon lighting](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/love-and-unity). Interestingly, Su-Mei Tse's swing is powered by [kinetic energy](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-kinetic-collection). Hence, it encourages people to swing in it in order to see its true potential. Controlled by a motor embedded in the ceiling, it takes the playground experience to a whole new level. As for the birdcage, although it might blind its occupant, it provides an illuminating prison that may be more enjoyable than the more common and dull version. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.5/10 - Popularity: 34% | Activity: 33% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Kinetic Energy Swings:** Creating swings that are powered by kinetic energy offers an opportunity to rethink and enhance the playground experience. - **Neon Light Sculptures:** Using neon lighting to create everyday sculptures opens up possibilities for unique and visually striking art pieces. - **Illuminating Prisons:** Designing birdcages with neon lighting offers a disruptive twist on a traditional object, providing an illuminating prison experience. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art:** The art industry can explore the use of unconventional materials like neon lighting to create unique sculptures and installations. - **Playground Equipment:** The playground equipment industry can incorporate kinetic energy technology into swings to create interactive and engaging play experiences. - **Interior Design:** The interior design industry can experiment with incorporating neon lighting into birdcages and other objects to create visually stunning and captivating spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sun-Lit Kite-Inspired Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cygnet-light.md) - [Organic Illuminated Artful Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cages-mobiles-and-rock.md) - [Suspended Lighting Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/suspended-lighting-installation.md) - [Accessibility-Enhancing Public Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/isometric-studio.md) - [Intricate Lighting Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/objects-of-common-interest1.md) - [Whimsical Bird-Like Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tiki-lamp.md) - [Inflatable Colorful Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/squeeze-inflatable-lamp.md) - [Metal Thread Pendant Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nest-lamp.md) - [Chic Saucer-Shaped Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/light-in-tight-light-fixture.md)
