# Perturbing Suburban Photography Suburbia Gone Wild Documents Eerily Similar Suburbs Worldwide By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2013-12-30 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/suburbia-gone-wild References: [gizmodo](http://gizmodo.com/the-coming-singularity-when-all-suburbs-look-the-same-1485702348) & [suburbiagonewild](http://suburbiagonewild.com/) Martin Adolfsson traveled all over the world for his project 'Suburbia Gone Wild,' but you wouldn't know it just by looking at it: [each neighbourhood is practically indistinguishable](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/highdensity-residential-design) from the next. It's impossible to ascertain whether an image is located in Bangkok or Mexico City; indeed, the copious, constantly reproducing environments seemingly threaten to merge into a single amalgam. It brings to mind Malvina Reynold's poignant lyric, "Little Boxes on the hillside/little boxes made of ticky tacky/little boxes on the hillside/and they all look just the same." Adolfsson's project exemplifies a thirst for distinction; his search for meaning and identity among such [uniform environments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/south-yarra-house) is palpable. However, despite his best efforts, it appears that each environment propagates the other, slowly inching towards a Suburban apex. Suburbia Gone Wild provides a thought-provoking [social commentary](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-last-resort-exhibition), leaving viewers to wonder whether or not our idiosyncrasies are being erased in favor of a singular archetype. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.1/10 - Popularity: 80% | Activity: 96% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Uniformity of Suburbia:** Opportunity for innovative approaches to create distinct and diverse suburban environments. - **Global Homogenization:** Opportunity to disrupt the trend of uniformity and promote cultural diversity in suburban development. - **Identity in Uniformity:** Opportunity to explore ways to foster individuality and uniqueness within seemingly indistinguishable suburban neighborhoods. ### Who This Affects Most - **Real Estate Development:** Disruptive innovation opportunities to create unique suburban communities that break away from the traditional cookie-cutter model. - **Architecture and Design:** Opportunity to challenge the uniformity of suburban architecture and design by incorporating elements that reflect the culture and identity of the community. - **Urban Planning:** Opportunity to rethink and reengineer suburban planning strategies to encourage diversity, creativity, and individuality in suburban neighborhoods. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dramatic Doomsday Bunker Images](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alastair-philip-wiper.md) - [Apocalypse Post Pandemic Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contemporary-urban-art.md) - [Striking Urban Wildlife Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clare-allin.md) - [Public Art Displays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paul-anthony-smith.md) - [Abstract Fantasy Home Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/abstract-fantasy-home.md) - [AI-Generated Real-World Transformations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ai-generated-world.md) - [Social Experiment Virtual Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/uncanny-spaces.md) - [Personal Nostalgic Photo Books](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/holy-ohio.md) - [Protest Sand Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bland-castles.md)
