# Animating Stereo Photography Recreating Old Japan in 3-D Using Stereo Images & GIF Animation By Katie Cordrey | Published 2010-01-17 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stereo-photography References: [pinktentacle](http://pinktentacle.com/2009/10/animated-stereoviews-of-old-japan/) & [flickr](http://www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/sets/72157604144707515/) Rob Oechsle a.k.a. Okinawa_Soba is an American expatriate living in Okinawa. He’s posted an amazing collection of Japanese stereo photography on Flickr. [Pink Tentacle](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pink-soldier-saber) has taken some of Oechsle’s stereoview images and made them 3-D for online viewing using GIF animation. GIF animation doesn’t render stereo photography like a stereoscope or View-Master does, but it approximates the stereographic effect. The current technology of GIF animation allows viewers to appreciate the marvelous 3-D images Japan recreated from what was at the time, its own state-of-the-art technology. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.3/10 - Popularity: 57% | Activity: 34% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Computers](https://www.trendhunter.com/computers) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Stereo Photography:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Explore advancements in virtual reality and augmented reality to create a more immersive and realistic stereo photography experience. - **3-D Animation:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Develop innovative software or tools that can convert traditional 2D images into dynamic 3D animations, making them more engaging and interactive. - **Historical Imaging:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Combine advanced imaging technologies, such as AI-powered restoration algorithms, with historical photographs to recreate and preserve the past in a compelling way. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Virtual Reality:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Collaborate with content creators and photographers to leverage virtual reality platforms for showcasing and distributing immersive stereo photography experiences. - **Software Development:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Create user-friendly and efficient software tools that automate the process of converting 2D images into 3D animations, enabling broader adoption and experimentation. - **Cultural Heritage Preservation:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Partner with museums and historical organizations to digitize and enhance archival photographs using cutting-edge imaging technologies, ensuring long-term preservation and wider accessibility. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [3D-Printed Flip Books](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stl-sculptures.md) - [Photo Animation Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/animate-old-photos.md) - [Historic AR Experiences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/historic-ar-experience.md) - [AI Style Transfers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/giblify-ai.md) - [Desktop GIF Displayers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cyber-cube.md) - [Photo Animation Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/revivifyai.md) - [Photo Animation Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a1art.md) - [3D Streaming Camera Models](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/acer-spatiallabs-stereo-eyes.md) - [AI-Fueled 3D Imaging Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/3d-imaging-tool.md)
