# Bathtub-Shaped Museums Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum Boasts a Fixture-Resembling Extension By Alexandra Serrano | Published 2012-12-27 | World Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stedelijk-museum References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2012/09/06/stedelijk-museum-amsterdam-by-benthem-crouwel-architects/) & [stedelijk.nl](http://www.stedelijk.nl/) Designed by architectural firm Benthem Crouwel Architekten, the Stedelijk museum's extension is monumental with its white facade that resembles a bathtub. Architect A.W. Weissman drew inspiration for the extension from its grandiose staircase and the original construction's light-welcoming interiors. This addition consists of an [underground library and exhibition halls](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/studio-for-architecture) while the museum's shop, restaurant and terrace are housed on ground level. Titled Museumplain, the newest fixture-resembling facade contrasts with the older Weissman building. According to architects, the interior's detailing "is in alignment, making the explicit contrast between the old building and the new building barely noticeable when walking through the museum." Though the exterior facades create a visually striking contrast, it is evident that the architectural intent is a seamless harmonizing of the Stedelijk museum's history with its future as a cultural center. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.1/10 - Popularity: 69% | Activity: 47% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [World](https://www.trendhunter.com/world) > [Travel](https://www.trendhunter.com/travel) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Bathtub-shaped Museums:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore unique architectural designs for museums that mimic everyday objects to create visually striking landmarks. - **Monumental Extensions:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop transformative architectural solutions for museum extensions that seamlessly blend with existing structures to create harmonious spaces. - **Seamless Harmonization:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Utilize interior detailing techniques to create a cohesive experience that merges the history and future of cultural centers. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Reimagine traditional architectural designs by incorporating unconventional elements and structures. - **Museum and Cultural Centers:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Innovate on the design and functionality of museums and cultural centers to enhance visitor experiences and engagement. - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Implement innovative interior design strategies that blur the boundaries between old and new constructions, creating seamless transitions. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Textured Glass Landmarks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/helsinki-design-and-architecture-museum.md) - [Paper-Inspired Artful Museums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/museum-for-papirkunst.md) - [Nature-Inspired Museum Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/art-sauna.md) - [White Concrete Boxy Museums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/museum-of-modern-art.md) - [Sculptural Museum Expansions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diller-scofidio-renfro1.md) - [Art Deco-Tower Angular Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/studio-libeskind.md) - [Multicultural Bright Historic Museums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fenix-museum-of-migration.md) - [Architectural Pottery Museums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bat-trang.md) - [Swooped Museum Roof Planes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/suzhou-museum-of-contemporary-art.md)
