# Land-Made Art The Station to Station Machine Creates Abstract Drawings on a Moving Train By Meghan Young | Published 2014-09-04 | Unique Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/station-to-station-machine References: [fubiz.net](http://www.fubiz.net/en/2014/08/30/artwork-in-train-made-by-the-land/) & [olafureliasson.net](http://www.olafureliasson.net/) There is a good reason why the Station to Station machine is named so. It is meant to be placed on a [moving train](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/art-in-motion-exhibition) in order to make art based on the land it travels over. A unique concept, it provides an interesting way to let Mother Nature have a voice in the [man-made art industry](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1). Created by Danish contemporary artist Olafur Eliasson, the Station to Station machine involves a black ball that rolls around a circular enclosed area leaving marks along the way. It is these marks that turn the white surface into a [work of art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/optical-flow). Although abstract, the illustrations are compelling in that they appear to occupy some vague point of purpose interpreted by the viewer. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.4/10 - Popularity: 72% | Activity: 81% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Unique](https://www.trendhunter.com/unique) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Interactive Land Art:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop technologies that allow viewers to interact with land-based art installations. - **Nature-inspired Art:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore ways to incorporate natural elements and processes into artwork, blurring the line between man-made and natural creations. - **Kinetic Sculptures:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Combine technology and motion to create dynamic sculptures that capture the essence of movement and travel. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art Installations:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Revolutionize the art installation industry by incorporating unconventional materials and interactive elements into large-scale projects. - **Contemporary Art:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Push the boundaries of contemporary art by exploring unconventional mediums, techniques, and concepts, inspired by nature and the environment. - **Travel and Tourism:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Enhance the travel experience by creating unique, on-the-go art installations that connect travelers with the landscapes they pass through. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Artfully Designed Train Stations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/design-studio-mad.md) - [Kinetic Artful Sand Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arrakis-30.md) - [AI-Generated Poetic Photo Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/emilio-alarcn.md) - [Digital City-Inspired Art Works](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grand-central-station.md) - [Glazed Pavilion Landscape Stations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dongdan-grassland-sea-ruins-station.md) - [Rebuilt Historic Train Stations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/train-station-in-the-forest.md) - [Gas Rig Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/striking-art-installation.md) - [Self-Operating Sand Artwork Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origin-coffee-table.md) - [Interactive Kinetic Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-kinetic-sculptures.md)
