# Cavernous Ice Rink Pavilions Stalactite is a Sculptural Structure That Shelters Shivering Skaters By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-12-07 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stalactite-pavilion References: [bustler.net](http://www.bustler.net/index.php/article/stalactite_by_aptum_architecture_-_warming_huts_v_2014_competition_entry/) & [aptumarchitecture](http://aptumarchitecture.com/content/stalactite) The Warming Huts v. 2014 competition has attracted some intriguing entries and the Stalactite Pavilion is one of them. This is a relatively small structure that's intended for placement directly on an [outdoor ice skating rink](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/colorado-college-honnen-arts-hub), on a frozen river or lake, and it serves the purposes of playground and refuge alike. APTUM Architecture assembled the shelter from [CNC](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/soundlink-plus)-milled corrugated cardboard, composing a large rectangular prism that appears to have had [vault-shaped voids](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/muqarnas-pavilion) excised. Several arches on all sides of the Stalactite Pavilion invite direct entry on one's very blades, welcoming children and adults through doorways of various heights. Inside, the downward-dangling cave-like projections hold oil lamps. These provide radiant heat and a warm orange glow. The temporary building serves for play and comfort. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.8/10 - Popularity: 36% | Activity: 11% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Ice Rink Refuge Pavilions:** Designing innovative shelters that serve both playground and real refuge purposes for ice skaters - **Sustainable Temporary Structures:** Creating sustainable and durable temporary pavilions using unconventional materials for outdoor recreational activities, such as ice skating - **Interactive Outdoor Installations:** Developing structures that invite playful interaction and exploration, while also offering practical uses for visitors ### Sectors Adopting This - **Architecture:** Exploring opportunities to integrate unconventional materials and designs into temporary and sustainable outdoor structures that enhance recreational experiences - **Recreation:** Investigating ways to enhance outdoor recreational activities, such as ice skating, by providing innovative and comfortable temporary structures - **Events:** Creating unique and memorable installations for events, such as ice rinks for winter festivals, that blend artistic creativity with practicality ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Illuminating Water-Based Pavillions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelter-pavilion.md) - [Ice Block-Formed Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/falling-hours.md) - [Climate-Sensitive Pavilion Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/querkraft.md) - [Timber Alpine Shelters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/selfsufficient-bivouac.md) - [Public Pavilion Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tess-pavilion.md) - [Star-Shaped Structural Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-archipelagic-void.md) - [Scandinavian Stone Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mountain-chamber.md) - [Cantilevered Porous Steel Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/baker-creek-pavilion.md) - [Mushroom-Like Wooden Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carbon-garden-pavilion.md)
