# Yielding Lumber Seating The Squishy Sticks Chair by New Colony Furniture is Hard Yet Forgiving By Meghan Young | Published 2013-06-11 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/squishy-sticks-chair References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/squishy-chairs-by-new-colony-furniture) & [newcolonyfurniture](http://newcolonyfurniture.com/) The Squishy Sticks Chair may look hard and unforgiving at first glance, but boasts a yielding surface that could be likened to classic cushions. Except, of course, that this 'cushion' isn't filled with fluffy cotton. Instead, the surface is made up of a bunch of small branches that depress individually when a person puts pressure on it. Designed by Annie Evelyn of Brooklyn-based company New Colony Furniture, the Squishy Sticks Chair is stunning to look at. Although out of its element, the wood gives it a whimsical organic appeal that many will appreciate. Beautifully modern, it can be mixed and matched with New Colony Furniture's other 'squishy' seating to create a unique dining room collection. It will certainly get people talking. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.5/10 - Popularity: 84% | Activity: 73% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Squishy Seating:** Designing furniture made out of uncommon materials such as Natural Branches creates new possibilities for seating designs. - **Organic Appeal Furniture:** Combining the natural and modern styles to create visually appealing furniture adds value to the interior design industry. - **Yielding Surfaces:** Incorporating sustainable materials to develop furniture that can provide the same comfort as a cushion promotes eco-friendly innovation. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Manufacturers can integrate sustainable materials into their production processes to develop new styles of eco-friendly seating. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers can experiment with multiple styles and materials to create unique yet stunning home interiors for their clients. - **Sustainability:** Promoting the use of sustainable materials in everyday products such as furniture can be beneficial for the environment while generating profits for the sustainable manufacturers and suppliers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Pillowy Wood Seating Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/press-armchair.md) - [Ultra-Comfy Seating Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cushy-lounge-chair.md) - [Sea Creature-Inspired Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/seat-urchin.md) - [Cubic Featherlight Seat Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/please-hold-up-chair.md) - [Visibly Undulating Stool Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/concave-stool.md) - [Modular Knit Seating Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knit-one.md) - [Haute Cohesive Plywood Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/peel-chair-by-blond.md) - [Naturalistic Stainable Seat Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/daisee-chair.md) - [Illusion Organic Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/siembra-capsule.md)
