With over five million grey squirrels darting about Britain, the government has decided to take control of the situation. The red squirrel population is dwindeling as a result, the species losing the survival of the fittest battle against its grey counterpart. "Grey squirrels carry squirrelpox virus which does not harm them but kills reds squirrels," the Telegraph said. "As well as forcing out red squirrels, greys destroy trees by stripping bark and have taken their toll on songbird populations by [taking eggs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chuckle-eggs-range). They also steal food from garden bird tables and infest loft spaces." So what's the plan of action? Just like the [pigeons](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/project-pigeon) who were put on [oral contraceptives](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chillhouse-x-opill), squirrels will also be put on the pill. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.6/10 - Popularity: 73% | Activity: 86% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Rodent Population Control:** Developing innovative methods of managing animal populations to mitigate negative ecosystem impact. - **Hormonal Birth Control for Wildlife:** Exploring the effectiveness of contraceptives on various animal species. - **Wildlife Conservation:** Focusing on preserving and protecting endangered or threatened wildlife. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Animal Healthcare:** Developing, testing and marketing hormonal contraceptives for use across a spectrum of animal species. - **Wildlife Management:** Providing humane and innovative solutions for animal population and habitat management. - **Environmental Restoration:** Creating a sustainable ecosystem for wildlife populations to thrive. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Targeted Bird Seed Blends](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cool-birds.md) - [Pest Mating Interruption Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/isca.md) - [Over-the-Counter Oral Contraceptives](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/daily-oral-contraceptive.md) - [Birth Control Delivery Services](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/birth-control-delivery1.md) - [Bird-Friendly Building Bricks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/swift-bricks.md) - [Bee-Friendly Bricks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bee-bricks.md) - [Vegetable-Themed Condoms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-rise-of-horticulture.md) - [Safe Snacking Zones](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/birds-at-the-beach.md) - [Barrier-Based Pest Controls](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/slick-barrier.md)
