# Satellite-Inspired Chairs Harow's 'Sputnik Chair' is Inspired by the Legendary Russian Satellite By Joey Haar | Published 2016-11-16 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sputnik-chair References: [harow.fr](http://www.harow.fr/sputnikchair.html) The 'Sputnik Chair' from French design studio 'Harow' was designed to mimic the [legendary Russian satellite](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/satellite-headphones) of the same name. Launched in 1957, at the dawn of the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the US, Sputnik had a massive cultural impact. Though it seems quaint (since satellites now launch all the time,) the fact that the Soviets could launch a vessel into space before the Americans weighed heavily on many people outside of the USSR. The fact that even young people today recognize the satellite's iconic design speaks to that lasting cultural impact. Harow's Sputnik Chair continues the societal fascination with the vessel. The chair's seat is shaped as a [half dome](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wigiwama) of hand-cast aluminum and steel with a rough finish that is reminiscent of the old craft. Its [thin, asymmetrical legs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dream-view-chair) taper towards the ends as well -- another reference. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.0/10 - Popularity: 11% | Activity: 12% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/furniture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Space-inspired Furniture:** Opportunity for designers to create furniture that pays homage to iconic space objects and satellites. - **Nostalgic Design:** Chance to capitalize on consumer nostalgia by creating products that evoke memories of historical cultural icons. - **Mixed Material Aesthetics:** Potential for designers to experiment with combining different materials in furniture design for a unique and modern look. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** Innovative designers have the chance to create unique and trendy furniture pieces inspired by iconic cultural objects. - **Interior Design:** Opportunity for interior design professionals to incorporate space-themed furniture into their projects and create distinctive and visually appealing spaces. - **Home Decor:** Disruptive potential in the home decor industry by offering consumers furniture that combines nostalgic design with contemporary aesthetics. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Otherworldly-Inspired Dynamic Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cosmos-chair.md) - [Celestial Body Office Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/air-chair-solar-series.md) - [Modern Seating Centerpieces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orbit-chair.md) - [Otherworldly Themed Rocking Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ufo-rocking.md) - [Espresso Maker-Inspired Seating](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moka-chair.md) - [High-End Headphones-Inspired Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-chair-design.md) - [Post-Modern Experimental Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/experiment-chair.md) - [Marbles-Inspired Intricate Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shepherd-studio.md) - [Circular Modernist Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/zerogravity-chair.md)
