Nocturne is an open-source firmware project designed to revive [Spotify’s](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spotify-home-thing) discontinued Car Thing hardware after official support ended in December 2024. Developed by the [Nocturne Team](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nocturne-sound-machine), the software replaces Spotify’s original system with a redesigned interface that restores music playback, playlist navigation, and device controls. Version 4.0.0 introduces direct Bluetooth connectivity through the Nocturne Companion app, removing the need for tethering or external [Raspberry Pi](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/poetry-camera) hardware used in earlier releases. The interface also adds full-screen album art gradients, updated navigation layouts, and support for offline functionality.

The software runs on the Car Thing’s existing Amlogic S905D2 processor with 512MB RAM and 4GB storage. Additional features include over-the-air updates, Spotify Connect switching, local file playback, podcast support, and gesture controls. The project remains community-developed and publicly available through GitHub, with companion app access tied to Nocturne+ subscriptions that support continued development.
