# Fluid Spiral Staircases The Risa Staircase Fans Out into a Visual Spectacle By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-09-18 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spiral-staircase References: [mymodernmet](http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/tron-meyer-risa-staircase) & [grig.no](http://www.grig.no/) Norwegian architect Tron Meyer has designed 'the Risa,' a beautiful [spiral staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cobalt-coach-house) fashioned from locally-sourced wood. The [laminated wood](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loop-furnitures) is an inventive choice of material for this type of design, which is more often seen in steel or concrete. The graceful silhouette is further softened by the unconventional material, creating an overall delicate, polished structure. The staircase is constructed so that it fans out, each succeeding step taking up a little more space than the last, almost as if it is gradually unfurling. In order to be as meticulous as possible, each step was cut with [computer-operated machinery](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/scaleo). The steps, which are three components made to form a single segment, also feature a hollow shape. The concave quality functions both aesthetically and practically; it looks visually appealing, but also makes the staircase safer to tread. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.1/10 - Popularity: 44% | Activity: 10% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Wood Spiral Staircases:** Opportunities for innovative design and sustainability by using locally-sourced wood. - **Digital Fabrication for Staircases:** Expanding use of computer-operated machinery for precise and detailed staircase construction. - **Safe and Aesthetic Staircases:** Increasing demand for staircase designs that prioritize both safety and visual appeal. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Opportunities to innovate the construction of staircases for a more aesthetic and practical option. - **Woodworking:** Growing demand for locally-sourced wood in building architecture and construction. - **Manufacturing:** Increasing use of digital fabrication in creating precise and innovative staircase designs. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dutch Barn Spiralled Staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/julia-van-beuningen.md) - [Timbered Passage Stair Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-annex.md) - [Bold Architectural Renovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-iron-house.md) - [Sculptural Townhome Staircases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atelier-pierre-thibault-1.md) - [Reimagined Traditional Library Ladders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/step-by-step-ladder.md) - [Sculptural Experimental Artforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ladder-series.md) - [Figure 8-Structured House](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-loop-house.md) - [Sleek Spiralling Ramp Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/czech-pavilion.md) - [Nature-Inspired Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/riva-collection.md)
