# Illuminated Spiderweb Sculptures Tomas Saraceno Directs Spiderwebs Into Mass-Scale Productions By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2015-05-01 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spiderwebs References: [fastcodesign](http://www.fastcodesign.com/3045760/artist-turns-spider-webs-into-haunting-sculptures?partner=rss) & [tomassaraceno](http://www.tomassaraceno.com/) Argentinian artist Tomas Saraceno transforms spiderwebs -- everyday, common annoyances -- into pieces of mesmerizing art. For this project, Saraceno placed the arachnids into Plexiglas cases, where he allowed them to make webs, occasionally turning the case on its side to confuse them and change the direction of their web-making. In some cases, Saraceno used several different types of spiders, combining their distinct webs to create a remarkable singular piece. The finished products were suspended with invisible wire, appearing to levitate mid-air in a dark gallery. Though Saraceno's spiderweb sculptures are breathtaking, they also provide a deep and complex commentary on the networking of our current, hyper-digital world, which is a fusion of natural and man-made forces. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.5/10 - Popularity: 40% | Activity: 28% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Sustainable Art:** The use of spiderwebs as a medium for art illuminates the possibilities of sustainable art. - **Nature-inspired Art:** Nature-inspired art is on the rise due to the ease with which it can be incorporated into daily life. - **Multi-species Collaborations:** Collaborations between different species offer opportunities for creative breakthroughs. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art:** Spiderweb sculptures demonstrate the potential for creative expression in unsuspecting materials and mediums. - **Sustainability:** The use of recycled materials can create stunning pieces of sustainable art and foster a conversation surrounding eco-friendly solutions. - **Environmental Science:** Studying and understanding the intricate network of spiderwebs can lead to innovative solutions in environmental science. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Physics-Informed Digital Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/motion-sculpture.md) - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md) - [Inflatable Vibrant Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forest-dancer.md) - [Spiky Inflatable Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/inflatable-sculptures1.md) - [Digital Archetype Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/christian-rex-van-minnen-1.md) - [Artful Garden Inflatable Spheres](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/this-is-air.md) - [Eclipse-Themed Rooftop Artworks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arc-zero.md) - [Wonderous Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/your-psychoacoustic-light-ensemble.md) - [Insect-Inspired Bronze Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/insect-bronze-sculptures.md)
