# Precarious Household Sculptures 'Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child' Installation Defies Gravity By Meghan Young | Published 2013-02-05 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spare-the-rod-and-spoil-the-child References: [itsnicethat](http://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/alejandro-pereda) & [alejandroalmanzapereda](http://www.alejandroalmanzapereda.com/) The Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child art installation looks like the creation of a mad scientist. Traditional household objects such as carpets, stools and cabinets have been haphazardly arranged and precariously balanced to create a [gravity-defying work of art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-great-tree). Connected by rays of light, which are in reality [neon lightbulbs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/miror-collection), the objects take on new meaning the longer people admire the sculpture as a whole. Created by Alejandro Almanza Pereda, an artist born in Mexico and based in Brooklyn, New York, the Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child art installation gives onlookers a feeling of suspense, as though at any minute it will all fall apart. Vibrantly eccentric and refreshingly familiar, the sculpture may have people holding their breath, but their minds will be running the whole time. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.4/10 - Popularity: 61% | Activity: 3% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Gravity-defying Installations:** Creating art installations that defy gravity by balancing and arranging household objects in unique ways. - **Reimagined Meanings:** Transforming ordinary objects into thought-provoking artworks by presenting them in unconventional ways. - **Suspenseful Art:** Engaging viewers by creating installations that evoke a sense of anticipation and suspense. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art:** Exploring new forms of artistic expression through unconventional installations and arrangements. - **Interior Design:** Incorporating gravity-defying and visually captivating concepts into home decor and furniture designs. - **Event Planning:** Incorporating suspenseful art installations into event spaces to captivate and engage attendees. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Broken-Aesthetic Sculpture Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brokenaesthetic-sculpture-collection.md) - [Sculptural Experimental Artforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ladder-series.md) - [Kid-Designed Sculptural Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/galerie-philia.md) - [Whimsical Childlike Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-eternal-child.md) - [Warped Georgian Townhouse Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-week-at-the-knees.md) - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md) - [Textured Cast Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-scad.md) - [Latin Playground-Inspired Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-sum-of-small-parts.md) - [Distorted Furniture Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/first-kiss-at-last-light.md)
