# Orbiting Space Junk Images of Earth's Garbage Ring By Cowbag | Published 2008-09-13 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/space-junk-esa-release-picture-of-space-garbage-circulating-earth References: [telegraph](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?xml=/earth/2008/04/15/scispace115.xml) & [space](http://www.space.com/spacewatch/space_junk.html) The [European Space Agency](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/galaxy-time) ([ESA](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/european-space-agency-1)) has released a series of computer-generated pictures depicting our planet surrounded by millions and million of pieces of space junk. Much like Saturn has rings, soon Earth will have a ring. Except ours is made from debris dumped in space and is traveling at 20,000 miles above Earth. The orbiting junk is largely comprised of [outdated telecommunication equipment](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tmobile-tsatellite). **Implications** - The ESA has also stated that the amount of junk that is orbiting the Earth has been steadily increasing by 200 pieces per year. With 600 working satellites in space at the moment, there is bound to be more junk floating around in the near future. Maybe the new job of space garbage men will open up soon! ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.2/10 - Popularity: 57% | Activity: 61% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Science](https://www.trendhunter.com/science) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Space Junk Cleanup:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop technologies and strategies to remove space junk and clean up Earth's orbit. - **Telecommunication Equipment Upgrades:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Create new and advanced telecommunication equipment to replace outdated ones and reduce space junk accumulation. - **Satellite Tracking and Monitoring:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop innovative solutions for tracking and monitoring satellites to prevent collisions and effectively manage space debris. ### Where This Applies - **Aerospace and Space Technology:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore new technologies and methods for space junk cleanup, satellite tracking, and advanced telecommunication equipment development. - **Environmental Services:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Offer specialized services to clean up space junk and reduce the environmental impact of debris in Earth's orbit. - **Telecommunications:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop next-generation telecommunication equipment that is more efficient, durable, and sustainable, reducing the generation of space junk. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Planet-Resembling Watch Faces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/galaxy-time.md) - [Artificial Meteor Shower Displays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/meteor-shower-display.md) - [Accessible Space Travel Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/space-elevator-concept.md) - [Earth-Inspired Wristwatches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mission-to-earth.md) - [Glass Solar System Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-solar-system-in-a-sphere.md) - [Space-Themed Marbled Bear Figurine](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/black-hole-1.md) - [Pizza-Shaped Universe Maps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/universe-map1.md) - [Meteorite Dust-Made Bricks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/european-space-agency-1.md) - [Galactic Sandwich Cookies](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/oreo-space-dunk.md)
