# Intergalactic Instruments The 'Space Bass' by Sarah Ovsiew Takes on an Alien Design By Amelia Roblin | Published 2010-11-14 | Unique Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/space-bass-by-sarah-ovsiew References: [walyou](http://www.walyou.com/blog/2010/11/12/the-space-bass/) & [coroflot](http://www.coroflot.com/sarahovsiew/Random-Works/5) A true purist would cringe to see such a timeless instrument bent into such an unusual form, but the 'Space Bass' by Sarah Ovsiew stands on its own. Taking shape as a new breed of musical instrument, the Venutian violin has a bent neck that sits across the shoulders of the performer. Allowing for bow-free playing, 'Project Harrison Ford,' known as 'Space Bass' by Sarah Ovsiew, was her response to the challenge of designing an object fit for a 'Star Wars' movie. This instrument seems to fit the bill. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.3/10 - Popularity: 24% | Activity: 8% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Unique](https://www.trendhunter.com/unique) > [Bizarre](https://www.trendhunter.com/bizarre) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Alien-inspired Instruments:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop musical instruments with unconventional designs inspired by alien aesthetics. - **Bow-free Playing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Create instruments that allow for playing without a bow, exploring new techniques and musical possibilities. - **Movie-inspired Designs:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Design instruments with unique visual elements inspired by popular movies, creating a niche market for movie enthusiasts and musicians. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Musical Instruments Manufacturing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore new manufacturing processes and materials to create instruments with unconventional designs and functionalities. - **Music Education:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop teaching methods and materials that cater to the specific needs of bow-free playing and unconventional instruments. - **Film and Entertainment:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Collaborate with filmmakers and musicians to create instrument designs inspired by popular movies, enhancing the visual and immersive experience of film and live performances. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Skeletal 3D-Printed Violins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/karen-ultralight-electric-violin.md) - [Shreddable Steampunk Guitars](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/steampunk-guitar.md) - [Radical Majestic Instrument Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ravenchord.md) - [Intergalactic-Inspired Lifestyle Products](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spacio.md) - [Boldly Bizarre Budget Guitars](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/budget-guitar.md) - [Ultra-Modern MIDI Instruments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/midi-device.md) - [Minimalist MIDI Guitar Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/midi-guitar.md) - [Electronic String Instruments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/harmoni.md) - [Space-Inspired Sound Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/beosound-2-vollebak.md)
