# Phonograph-Embedded Desks The Soundbox Desk Can Amplify Audio From Your Smartphone By Rahul Kalvapalle | Published 2014-10-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/soundbox-desk References: [gizmag](http://www.gizmag.com/vintage-style-desk-amplifier/34239/) & [behance.net](https://www.behance.net/bbangddogi) The Soundbox Desk is an incredible contraption, designed by Korean design and metal art student Jina U, that uses a [phonograph-inspired horn](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lego-gramophone) to amplify audio played from a smartphone. Amazingly, the contraption doesn't require electricity. The desk comes with an accompanying chair; both pieces are crafted from acacia wood, copper and steel. The most awesome aspect of the Soundbox Desk is obviously its horn, which is located in a square-shaped cabinet on the right side of the desk. The phonograph-style horn carries sound from its [speaker to the front side](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/leapsonic-speaker) of the cabinet, somewhat like the pipes that sit beneath your kitchen sink! This design is truly ingenious, even if the sound quality may not be up to scratch for hardcore audiophiles. The Soundbox Desk was developed by Jina U's graduate exhibition at the [National University of Technology](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gat-umbrella) in Seoul. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.8/10 - Popularity: 95% | Activity: 40% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Phonograph-inspired Audio Amplification:** Opportunity for creating innovative audio amplification systems inspired by phonograph design. - **Non-electrical Audio Enhancement:** Disruptive innovation potential in developing non-electrical methods for enhancing audio output. - **Multi-functional Furniture:** Opportunity to incorporate innovative features, such as audio amplification, into furniture designs. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Innovation in audio-enhancing furniture presents growth potential within the furniture manufacturing industry. - **Audio Technology:** Opportunities for advancements in audio technology to improve non-electrical audio amplification methods. - **Design and Metal Art:** Integration of functional and artistic elements in furniture design offers innovative possibilities within the design and metal art industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Posh Power-Free Smartphone Speakers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amplifying-speaker.md) - [Industrial Design Radio Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/radio-desk.md) - [Stylish Low-Tech Sound Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frame-sound.md) - [Transparent Gramophone-Like Speakers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mini-speaker-concept.md) - [Industrially Designed Desktop Speakers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/desktop-speaker.md) - [Speaker-Base Table Design Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/verre-desk.md) - [Subtle Tech-Infused Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/koble-tori-40.md) - [Space-Saving Desktop Microphones](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/desk-microphone-concept.md) - [Steampunk Desktop Appliances](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/3in1-desk.md)
