# Sound Wave Chairs Matthew Plummer Fernandez By Pearl | Published 2008-09-28 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sound-wave-chairs-matthew-plummer-fernandez References: [dvice](http://dvice.com/archives/2008/09/believe_it_or_n.php?p=10&cat=undefined#more) & [plummerfernandez](http://www.plummerfernandez.com/) This is not a [Lego](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blazing-phoenix) chair, rather it is a chair whose contour resembles the chart (shown) showing sound waves mapped on a 3D graph of volume (height), frequency (depth), and time (width). The London-based designer, Matthew Plummer Fernandez had to experiment not with his drafting board but with more than 700 sounds in order to get this [chair design](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/deepmind-ai-chair). The actual chair is made up of [water-jet-cut polyethylene foam](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-limbo-chair) so it is comfortable enough to sit on. But the price might be a tad too loud - $7,280! ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.9/10 - Popularity: 38% | Activity: 11% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/furniture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Sound Wave Chair Design:** Designing furniture based on sound wave mapping using modern technology. - **Polyethylene Foam Furniture:** Using polyethylene foam in furniture design for comfort. - **Experimenting with Sound for Design:** Experimenting with sound to create unique and innovative furniture designs. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture:** Incorporating sound wave mapping into furniture design to create unique and high-priced pieces. - **Material Manufacturing:** Innovating the use of polyethylene foam in furniture design for greater comfort and durability. - **Design:** Experimenting with technology and unconventional materials to create unique furniture designs. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Wavy Lounge Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wavy-lounge-chair.md) - [Natural Sound-Amplifying Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amplification-of-the-senses-chair.md) - [Music-Inspired Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modern-chair1.md) - [Padded Upright Vibrant Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fender-chair.md) - [Modular Table Seatings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-table-and-chair.md) - [Soothing Boat-Like Lounge Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/canoa-chair.md) - [Curvaceous Padded Lounge Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/talk-chair.md) - [Waste-Incorporated Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knoll-chairs.md) - [High-End Headphones-Inspired Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-chair-design.md)
