# Camera Systems Sony Hawk-Eye Adds Virtual Measurement To NFL Gameplay By Colin Smith | Written with AI assistance | Published 2026-02-08 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sony-hawkeye References: [gizmodo](https://gizmodo.com/sonys-hawk-eye-cameras-still-arent-giving-football-fans-the-one-thing-they-want-2000717879) & [hawkeyeinnovations](https://www.hawkeyeinnovations.com/) [Sony](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sony-3) introduced Hawk-Eye to the [NFL](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/zebras-rfid-tags) as a camera-driven virtual measurement system, featuring multiple 8K catwalk-mounted cameras that produce on-screen line-to-gain visuals and feed measurements to the league’s officiating center. The rollout followed tests in 2024 and the system was used across the 2025 season and at Super Bowl LX, demonstrating stadium-scale deployment. Hawk-Eye captures footage that officials in New York use to calculate distances and create real-time virtual recreations for broadcasts and in-stadium displays, replacing slower chain gangs for measurements. The tech complements—but does not replace—the on-field referee, who still spots the ball; Hawk-Eye then measures distance from that human spot. For fans and broadcasters, Hawk-Eye speeds visible measurement and modernizes officiating visuals while highlighting a broader trend toward [camera-first adjudication in sport](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/highlight-factory). Its current reliance on a human spot underscores ongoing limits in automating subjective calls like forward progress, but it points to incremental tech integration in high-stakes games.
