# Maritime Patrol Drones General Atomics Introduced an Expanded Sonobuoy Dispensing System By Debra John | Written with AI assistance | Published 2026-02-04 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sonobuoy-dispensing-system References: [newatlas](https://newatlas.com/military/drone-sub-hunting-patrols-sonobuoys/) [General Atomics Aeronautical Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spacebased-intelligence) tested its 'MQ-9B SeaGuardian' maritime patrol drone, featuring the new Expanded Sonobuoy Dispensing System (ESDS) designed to drop and deploy sonobuoys for anti-submarine operations. The rollout was demonstrated in recent flight tests and introduced ESDS as a payload enhancement for long-endurance unmanned patrols. The ESDS pod doubles sonobuoy payload compared with previous configurations and enables deployment of Multi-static Active Coherent (MAC) sonobuoys, which coordinate [active sonar pings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sonar-systems) across multiple sensors. The configuration increased the SeaGuardian’s capacity to sustain deep-ocean search patterns and to create wider temporary sensor networks. For naval operators, the SeaGuardian with ESDS extends persistent ASW coverage without adding crewed flight hours, improving area surveillance and response. This capability reflects a trend toward using [long-endurance unmanned platforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/Persistent-Aerial-Intelligence) to assume routine maritime monitoring tasks.
