# Layered Paper Illustrations The 'Into the Water' Project from Sonia Alins Shows Subjects Swimming By Riley von Niessen | Published 2016-10-31 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sonia-alins References: [fubiz.net](http://www.fubiz.net/en/2016/10/16/surreal-paper-cut-illustrations/) & [instagram](https://www.instagram.com/soniaalins/) Spanish artist Sonia Alins is the creative behind 'Into the Water,' a project that shows strangely shaped human figures in a seemingly expansive body of water. In order to create this effect, she draws them onto a single piece of paper and then layers a [transparent piece over top](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dehydrating-book). With this, she makes it appear as though they're immersed into the water, allowing a cloudy version of their bodies to remain exposed. While the paper beneath remains clear in most of the artwork to generate a calm and dewy effect, Sonia Alins adds in components in others to recreate the look of [small aquatic plants](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/marine-ecosystem-sculptures). In addition to this, she adds [ripples around her subjects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ripples-collection) to make their immersion in the water even more evident. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.1/10 - Popularity: 71% | Activity: 43% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Layered Paper Art:** The use of layered paper techniques in art can create realistic and stunning visual effects, providing opportunities for disruptive innovations in the art and printing industries - **Water-themed Art:** Art that uses water as a theme or subject matter can create imaginative and unique perspectives; this trend can lead to innovative approaches in the advertising and tourism industries - **Minimalist Illustration:** The use of simplicity and minimalism in illustrations can create striking and memorable artwork, offering opportunities for innovative designs in the graphic design and publishing industries ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art Industry:** The use of creative techniques and unique themes in art can lead to innovative and disruptive trends for the art industry - **Printing Industry:** The use of layered paper techniques in printing can create visually stunning products and lead to innovative approaches in the printing industry - **Tourism Industry:** The use of water-themed art in advertisements can provide creative and unique perspectives to promote travel destinations and disrupt the tourism industry ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sculptural Paper Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fragmenti.md) - [Paper-Made Mosaic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/real-life-architecture-exhibition.md) - [Sculptural Mixed-Media Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folded-echoes.md) - [Stunning Origami Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origami-portaits.md) - [Mesmerizing Fluid Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flow-fountain.md) - [Origami-Inspired Porcelain Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/saori-matsushita.md) - [Structured Art Shows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flowchart.md) - [Fluid Function Art Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/optical-flow.md) - [Intricate Site-Specific Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folded-time.md)
