Dr. Niraj Lal, a researcher at the Australia National University, is designing a new breed of solar cells that are inspired by the unique shape of [Buddhist singing bowls](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sonic-heirloom). Dr. Lal believes that just as the singing bowls cause sound to resonate to create a distinctive sound, miniature versions may be able to interact with light in much the same way, leading to solar cells more adept at capturing sunlight.

While [regular solar panels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-sula) lose a large amount of energy as it hits the surface -- making them inefficient -- singing bowl-shaped cells cause the light to bounce around them inside more. T

Dr. Lal and his team are now looking into figuring out how the singing bowl-inspired sollar cell design can be incorporated into more complex structures.
