# Smoky Laser Installations This Art Installation Consists of Smoke Signals Fired at a Laser By Rahul Kalvapalle | Published 2014-07-25 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smoke-signals References: [engadget](http://www.engadget.com/2014/07/25/art-project-smoke-signals-lasers/) & [binairytalk.niklas-isselburg](http://binairytalk.niklas-isselburg.com/?page_id=31) 'Binairy Talk' is an interesting [art installation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/multimedia-art-installation), put together painstakingly by artists and engineers at the Koln International School of Design in Germany, that consists of ring-shaped smoke signals being fired at a [green laser sensor](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/laserabc-laser-show-projector). The installation aims to give viewers an understanding of ethereal radio waves, a family of light and wave signals that are constantly around us but that we tend to take for granted. Binairy Talk essentially uses a sound generator and a pulsing device to aim and fire smoke rings at the laser sensor. These rings are then interpreted by a computer in binary fashion, i.e. as being either ones or zeros, with resulting messages displayed on a screen. The ultimate aim was to use an ancient system of communication -- smoke signals -- to "create awareness as to how much data and information constantly surrounds us." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.1/10 - Popularity: 8% | Activity: 46% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Science](https://www.trendhunter.com/science) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Ethereal Radio Waves:** Opportunity for exploring the potential of ethereal radio waves as a medium for communication or artistic expression. - **Interpretation of Binary Signals:** Disruptive innovation opportunity to develop new ways of interpreting binary signals through unconventional methods. - **Integration of Art and Technology:** Emerging trend of combining art and technology to create unique and interactive installations for educational purposes. ### Where This Applies - **Art and Design:** Artists and designers can leverage the concept of smoky laser installations to create captivating experiences and interactive artworks. - **Communication and Broadcasting:** Opportunity for communication and broadcasting industries to explore the potential of ethereal radio waves for innovative communication methods. - **Education and Entertainment:** Educational institutions and entertainment companies can incorporate interactive installations like Binairy Talk to engage and educate audiences. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Water-Covered Speaker Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shaped-by-water.md) - [Botanical Signal Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/plant-pulses.md) - [Wonderous Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/your-psychoacoustic-light-ensemble.md) - [Interactive Mountain Oracles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/whispering-mountains.md) - [Illuminated Curtained Light Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/making-the-invisible-visible.md) - [Unique Interactive Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-aurora.md) - [Water Movement Sculptural Instruments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/inner-waves.md) - [Immersive Light Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/psychoacoustic-light-ensemble.md) - [Urban Soundscape Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moment-installation.md)
