The smart crosswalks are not all about the pedestrian, it is also to help ensure vehicles understand where it is appropriate to stop. The crosswalks will be tested out in London intersections this summer. The system is called Pedestrian Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique (SCOOT) and it uses the cameras to figure out exactly how many people are waiting to cross the street.
