This is round two for architects Andreas Claus Schnetzer and Pils Gregor who previously designed the [Pallet House](http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pallet-house) earlier in the year. Insulated with straw and clay, the Slumtube house provides affordable shelter in Johannesburg, shielding against the extreme hot and cold temperatures in the region. An improvement on their last design, it was built to European standards for structural soundness. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.7/10 - Popularity: 93% | Activity: 71% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Shipping Pallet Housing:** Architects are innovating low-cost housing using shipping pallets, thus reducing carbon footprints and reusing waste. - **Sustainable Living Spaces:** Designers are creating eco-friendly living spaces like the Slumtube house, which emphasizes efficiency and environmental protection through use of straw and clay insulation. - **Affordable Housing Solutions:** Efforts to provide economical and practical housing are ongoing, with projects like the Slumtube house representing a valuable contribution towards this goal. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Real Estate:** Incorporation of cost-effective and green materials in construction of low-income housing will appeal to environmentally conscious consumers seeking affordability. - **Sustainable Architecture:** Designers and architects are exploring ways of creating buildings that are eco-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective, allowing for more affordable and sustainable housing solutions. - **Waste Management:** Efficient disposal and repurposing of shipping pallets—a form of waste with numerous industrial applications—in construction of housing holds disruptive innovation opportunities for businesses involved in waste management and construction sectors. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Triple Shipping Container Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modhouse-tiny-home.md) - [Climate-Responsive Prefab Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drop-pod.md) - [Reinvented Compact Living](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/affordable-housing-prototype.md) - [Compact Sustainable Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-cabana.md) - [Sleek Fire-Resistant ADUs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tetraone.md) - [Eco-Friendly Modular Refugee Shelters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/allspace-1.md) - [Economical Modular Wooden Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cake-house.md) - [Compact 3d-Printed Housing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tiny-house-lux.md) - [Affordable Housing Prototypes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tiny-house-1.md)
