# Coated Tar Chalets The Mork-Ulnes Ski Cabin Structure is Coated in Tar to Protect Against Snow By M | Published 2016-05-04 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ski-cabin-structure References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2016/05/04/mork-ulnes-california-ski-chalet-cabin-black-facade-tar-architectcure/) & [morkulnes](http://morkulnes.com/) The ski cabin structure designed by [Mork-Ulnes Architects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/silver-lining-house) is located in northern California and features a unconventional coating of black tar across the exterior of the premise that acts as protection against the snow. The tar coats the [timber wood](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cross-cabin) on all four sides used to create the facade, as a preventative measure to protect the wood from damage from large snowfalls. The chalet is a modern take on a [traditional ski cabin](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ski-house) with large scale windows, two levels and a geometric shape. The home is located on an elevated slope that often receives a large amount of snow in the winter season. The tar used on the timber is inspired by a Norwegian technique that keeps the wood weather resistant as well as insect-proof by blending the abode into the landscape. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.3/10 - Popularity: 84% | Activity: 66% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Tar-coating Protection:** Opportunity for developing new protective coatings using tar for various applications, such as infrastructure and outdoor furniture. - **Modern Ski Cabin:** Opportunity to design innovative and functional ski cabins with modern features and materials to enhance the skiing experience. - **Weather-proof Wood:** Opportunity to create wood products that are resistant to extreme weather conditions, providing enhanced durability and longevity. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture:** Architects can explore new techniques and materials, such as tar coating, to create innovative and sustainable structures. - **Tourism and Hospitality:** The ski cabin industry can embrace modern designs and materials to create unique and memorable guest experiences. - **Wood Products:** Wood manufacturers can develop weather-resistant products using techniques like tar coating to expand their market and offer longer-lasting solutions. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Charred Wood Mountain Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alexander-jermyn-architecture.md) - [Angular Black Cantilevered Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tallowwood-cabin.md) - [Black-Stained Wooden Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smoke-lake-cabin.md) - [Circular Windowed Woodland Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/timber-nest.md) - [Modern Holiday Mountain Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/krasnyk-house.md) - [Mountain Courtyard Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ski-house.md) - [Contemporary Ski Home Projects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/traditional-ski-chalet.md) - [Reflective Mountain-Based Shelters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelter-santerpass.md) - [Dark-Green Minimal Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/scalar-architecture.md)
