# Skateboard Brake Systems The 'Boarder Kontrol' Skateboard Enhances Skateboard Safety By Michael Hemsworth | Published 2016-01-14 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/skateboard-safety References: [gizmag](http://www.gizmag.com/boarder-kontrol-skateboard/41326/) & [kickstarter](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1008703715/boarder-kontrol-skateboards-brace-yourself) One of the biggest issues when it comes to skateboard safety is the lack of brakes, which the 'Boarder Kontrol' Skateboard looks to make a problem of the past. Incorporating a series of brake pads into the deck design, the 'Boarder Kontrol' Skateboard is operated by a ripcord that allows riders to maintain control over the speed when going down hills. The leash that works to activate the brakes when in motion also works as an additional skateboard safety feature as it enables better balance of the deck. Although the 'Boarder Kontrol' Skateboard is a standalone product, the brand hopes to create a [retrofit kit](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/easyway) that would enable riders to incorporate the technology into their existing decks. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.8/10 - Popularity: 88% | Activity: 79% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Sports](https://www.trendhunter.com/sports) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Skateboard Safety Innovations:** Brake systems and other safety features are being developed to improve the safety of skateboarding. - **Personal Transportation Innovations:** Innovations in personal transportation are leading to the development of safer and more efficient options. - **Smart Retrofits:** The retrofit market for existing products is growing alongside the development of new technologies. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Sports Equipment:** Companies specializing in sports equipment are developing safer options for extreme sports enthusiasts. - **Transportation:** The personal transportation industry is constantly looking for ways to make their products safer and more efficient. - **Retrofitting:** The market for retrofitting existing products is growing as new technologies are developed, offering an opportunity for disruptive innovation in retrofitting skateboard brake systems. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Backpack-Adhering Skateboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/magnetic-skateboard.md) - [Skateboard-Inspired Electric Scooters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bustin-boards-skatex.md) - [Two-Wheeled Surfing-Inspired Skateboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surf-skateboard.md) - [Hybridized Electric Longboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hybridized-electric-longboards.md) - [Bluetooth-Operated Motorized Skateboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/new-electric-skateboard.md) - [App-Controlled Skates](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/appcontrolled-skates.md) - [Trailer-Mounted Brake Control Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brake-control-system.md) - [Mountain Bike Brake Monitors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brake-monitor.md) - [Senior-Supporting Mobility Skateboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-mobility-skateboard.md)
