Sidewalk Labs, the urban planning arm of [Alphabet](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/robotaxi-1), created a sensor named [Pebble](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pebble-street-light) that can leverage [live data to improve city parking](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/parking-management) by displaying available spaces.

The new Pobble sensor functions as an attachment to a parking space and can detect whether a vehicle is occupying the space or not. Pebble can then transfer data to the cloud using cellular networks by leveraging hardware attached to street poles. No identifying information will be collected during the process, as Pebble will not use cameras.

Sidewalk Labs stated that the technology could be used by city agencies to help local businesses or also by real estate developers to create shared parking infrastructure. Additionally, the organization says the technology could be integrated into navigation platforms like Google Maps.
