# Sniper-Revealing Apps An App from Vanderbilt University Locates Your Enemies on a Map By Alexander Lam | Published 2013-05-06 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shooter-locating-app References: [fastcoexist](http://www.fastcoexist.com/1681939/an-app-that-tells-you-where-people-are-shooting-at-you-from) & [nslab.ee.ntu.edu.tw](http://nslab.ee.ntu.edu.tw/IPSN13/pdf/2-1.pdf) A new shooter locating app being developed at Vanderbilt University locates exactly where the user is being shot from. Using a device that connects to your smartphone, the location from where each bullet being shot is shown on a map. The team of researchers headed by Akos Ledeczi adapted a previous military version to create the portable system. Sensors housed in a module the size of a pack of cards receive the necessary data. A gun’s muzzle blasts and shockwaves are recorded and fed to the app’s algorithms. With a network of other phones using the same app, the technology precisely calculates the shooter’s location. This technology has important implications for dignitaries who have a high risk of being shot at. In addition, law enforcement personnel would also see a large benefit from the app. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.3/10 - Popularity: 88% | Activity: 92% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Gadgets](https://www.trendhunter.com/gadgets) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Shooter Locating Technology:** Opportunity for developing apps or devices that can accurately locate the source of gunfire, providing valuable information for personal safety or law enforcement purposes. - **Real-time Mapping:** Potential for creating apps or platforms that can dynamically map the locations of shooter incidents in real-time for improved situational awareness and response. - **Sensor Integration:** Opportunity to develop innovative devices or wearables that can integrate advanced sensors to detect and analyze gunfire, aiding in shooter identification and localization. ### Where This Applies - **Security & Defense:** Disruptive innovation opportunities for the security and defense industry to develop advanced shooter locating technologies for protecting dignitaries and enhancing law enforcement efforts. - **Mobile App Development:** Potential for mobile app developers to create shooter locating apps that utilize sensor data to provide real-time information on shooter locations, contributing to personal safety and law enforcement response strategies. - **Sensor Technology:** Innovative opportunities in the sensor technology industry to design and manufacture advanced sensor modules capable of accurately detecting and analyzing gunfire for shooter localization applications. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Proactive Tracker Detection Apps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/detection-app.md) - [Range-Roving Sniper Scopes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sniper-scope.md) - [Anti-Stalking App Features](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tile.md) - [Firearm Policy Mapping](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/no-gun-zones-map-tool.md) - [Smart Target Launcher Apps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/caldwell-clays-app.md) - [Personal Security Apps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/protector-app.md) - [Tracker-Detecting Smartphone Updates](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/google-find-my-device-network.md) - [Stealthy GPS Navigators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gps-navigators.md) - [Sound-Localizing Smartphone Cameras](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/soundcam-go.md)
