# Sulking Superhero Drawings Shih-Mao Depicts Marvel Comics' Best as Moody Brats By Jason Soy | Published 2011-12-19 | Pop Culture Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shih-mao References: [heyoscarwilde.tumblr](http://heyoscarwilde.tumblr.com/post/14408410346/smells-like-teen-spirit-spider-man-illustration#notes) & [flickr](http://www.flickr.com/photos/ffhwu) If superheroes were to act similarly to how these Shih-Mao illustrations depicted them, I think characters like [Spider-Man](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/your-friendly-neighborhood-spiderman), Daredevil and Silver Surfer would not have made it into mainstream culture. After all, no one wants to read about how [costumed vigilantes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sickkids-foundation-ad) are pouting in class, listening to awful karaoke or sulking on a beach over a broken surfboard. It's these kinds of wildly quirky ideas that make Shih-Mao's art fun to look at while simultaneously distinguishing his work from his peers. Shih-Mao is a Taiwanese artist who primarily renders digital paintings, though he's also dabbled in photography. He enjoys taking well-established characters and giving them a personal spin which morphs them into zanier incarnations of themselves. Simply look through his series of [fairytale renderings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sen-donnan) and you'll dive into the mind of a hilarious and creative individual. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.6/10 - Popularity: 89% | Activity: 70% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 90% men, 10% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial - Top markets: North America, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Quirky Character Depictions:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation: Develop a platform or app that allows users to create and share their own whimsical versions of popular characters. - **Personalized Artistic Interpretations:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation: Create an online marketplace where artists can offer customized illustrations of well-known characters, tailored to individual preferences. - **Humorous Visual Storytelling:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation: Build an interactive storytelling platform that combines humorous illustrations with engaging narratives, creating a new form of entertainment. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Digital Art:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation: Develop AI-powered tools that automate certain aspects of the digital art creation process, enabling artists to explore new styles and techniques more efficiently. - **Online Marketplaces:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation: Introduce a specialized online marketplace that connects artists who create unconventional character depictions with buyers looking for unique and offbeat artwork. - **Interactive Storytelling:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation: Combine augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies to create immersive storytelling experiences where users can interact with humorous illustrations in a three-dimensional space. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Limited Humorous Art Prints](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/david-shrigley-1.md) - [Comic-Inspired Soda Cans](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-heroes.md) - [Superhero-Themed Clogs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spiderman-x-crocs.md) - [Villain-Themed Shoe Capsules](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kith-for-asics.md) - [Comic Book Coloring Kits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/made-by-me-manga-artist-set.md) - [Comic Book Hero Collectibles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/comic-book-heros.md) - [Comic-Themed Tech Accessories](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/super-heroes-vs-villains.md) - [Sailor Origin-Story Mangas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/eye-lit-popeye.md) - [3D Superhero Block-Puzzle Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amazing-spiderman-set.md)
