# Woodland Branch Shelves Sebastian Errazuriz's Shelving Unit Designs are Built from Fallen Trees By M | Published 2016-01-13 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelving-unit-design References: [thisiscolossal](http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2016/01/sebastian-errazuriz-tree-furniture/?utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=webfeeds) & [meetsebastian](http://www.meetsebastian.com/) Sebastian Errazuriz is both a designer and creative that has found a way to [upcycle fallen trees](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/formwork-collection) collected throughout regions in South America to create [unique shelving unit designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelving-unit-01). The shelves transform the stretched out branches of the tree into the base of the ledge coupled with a glass plank so that books and items can be artfully placed on top. The unconventional use of the natural tree's shape renders each shelf unique and one-of-a-kind. The shelves are beautiful and natural in aesthetic, keeping the raw shape of the tree's natural growth as a focal point in the design. The shelf can be mounted against the wall with the glass racks fixed onto the branches to create a sturdier platform to hold books, objects and knick-knacks. The unit becomes a functional furniture piece as well as a work of art displayed on the wall. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.2/10 - Popularity: 88% | Activity: 89% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Upcycled Furniture:** The use of fallen trees to create unique shelving unit designs demonstrates the trend of upcycling in furniture design. - **Natural Aesthetic:** Keeping the raw shape of the tree's natural growth as a focal point in the design taps into the trend of incorporating natural aesthetics in home decor. - **Functional Art:** The shelving unit's dual functionality as both a furniture piece and a work of art reflects the trend of combining practicality with artistic design. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** The use of fallen trees to create shelving units presents disruptive innovation opportunities for the furniture design industry to explore more sustainable and unique materials. - **Home Decor:** The incorporation of natural aesthetics in the design of shelving units opens up disruptive innovation opportunities in the home decor industry to create products that bring nature indoors. - **Art and Craft:** The fusion of functionality and artistic design in shelving units offers disruptive innovation opportunities for the art and craft industry to create functional pieces that showcase creativity. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dynamic Storage-Display Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelf-life.md) - [Sculptural Bookshelves Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-bookshelf.md) - [Abstract Jigsaw-Like Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spectator-shelf.md) - [Simple Assembly Sustainable Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/svolta.md) - [Forest-Inspired Wooden Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hayashi-cabinet.md) - [Modular Configuration Shelving Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/repisa-01.md) - [Versatile Modern Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/utility-shelf.md) - [Felled Tree Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ptacek-home-chunk-line.md) - [Japanese Woodwork-Inspired Shelving Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/altitude-shelving.md)
