Earlier this month, Toronto hosted an independent Social Media Week event called SMWi Toronto 2016. The event was designed to bring together professionals from a wide range of industries to explore how social media and technology are shaping the future of business, society and culture.
The first day of this year's event featured a full day of keynote speeches, panel discussions and presentations from professionals such as Councillor Norm Kelly, Futurist Jesse Brown and brands such as Shopify, Buzzfeed and more.
One of the notable keynotes held on day one of the conference was given by Trend Hunter President and Head of Research Shelby Walsh. During a session called 'Creating A Cultural Connection,' Shelby discussed buzz-worthy topics such as mobile marketing, personalization and big data. She explained how momentary marketing capitalizes on the fear of missing out and the need for brands to interact with consumers in real time. As Shelby emphasized, "We are watching our friend's lives unfold in real time on our phones."
Back in Toronto for the first time since 2013, SMWi 2016 provided an engaging platform to showcase the talent, expertise and skills of the city's top industry professionals.
