# Pencil Shaving-Inspired Illuminators The 'Sharpener' Lampshades by Nanako Kume are Charming By Michael Hemsworth | Published 2022-09-27 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sharpener-lampshades References: [yankodesign](https://www.yankodesign.com/2022/09/26/designer-builds-a-massive-sharpener-to-make-these-beautiful-pencil-shaving-lampshades/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=designer-builds-a-massive-sharpener-to-make-these-beautiful-pencil-shaving-lampshades) The 'Sharpener' lampshades have been designed by Nanako Kume as a whimsical, childhood-inspired home decor style that calls to mind classroom art supplies. The lampshades are designed with specific [wood styles and grains](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-soul) in mind, which are then shaped to give them a [pencil-inspired form](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bic-lamp). The pieces of wood are then dyed on the exterior before being shaved using a large blade system to craft one-of-a-kind illuminator accessories for any home or office space. The lampshades take a decidedly childish approach to home decor, which will no doubt be admired by those with a penchant for rustically artistic aesthetics. Kume commented on the 'Sharpener' lampshades saying, "Since childhood, I was fascinated by the shape and fleetingness of shavings that are made when sharpening pencil. I thought that by increasing the size and thickness of what must be discarded as waste, it would be possible to create new products while maintaining the beauty of the shape.” ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.5/10 - Popularity: 97% | Activity: 84% | Freshness: 13% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Childhood-inspired Home Decor:** Creating unique designs inspired by childhood memories to offer a non-conventional decor style for homes and offices. - **Whimsical Lighting:** Designing playful and creative lighting fixtures for an artistic and lively ambiance to spaces. - **Sustainable Woodworking:** Incorporating sustainable woodworking and eco-friendly practices to offer environmentally-conscious decor options. ### Who This Affects Most - **Home Decor:** Introducing unconventional and creative designs to liven up the aesthetics of homes and apartments. - **Lighting:** Producing fun and exciting lighting options for commercial and residential applications, such as hospitality and interior design. - **Furniture Design:** Incorporating sustainable woodworking practices in the creation of furniture. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Twisting Timber Lampshade Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twisted-lasercut-wooden-lampshade.md) - [Posh Paper Craft-Inspired Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/japandi-lamp.md) - [Hollow Candle-Like Table Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lampe.md) - [Sculpted Wooden Desktop Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sleepy-wood-desk-lamp.md) - [Tornado-Inspired Illuminator Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/storm-lamp.md) - [Geometric Nostalgic Night Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/handmaid-table-lamp.md) - [Pine Wood-Inspired Minimal Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jakobsson.md) - [Traditional Tower-Inspired Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-pagoda-lamp.md) - [Air Balloon-Inspired Lamp Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/air-balloon-lamp.md)
