# Gay Puppet Petitions Lair Scott Asks If Bert and Ernie Should Marry on Sesame Street By Vincent Ntumbe | Published 2011-08-11 | Pop Culture Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sesame-street-could-go-pink References: [huffingtonpost](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/10/bert-ernie-gay-marriage_n_923147.html?ir=Canada) & [change.org](http://www.change.org/petitions/let-bert-ernie-get-married-on-sesame-street#signatures) An online petition started by Lair Scott and signed by 900 people is calling for Bert and Ernie to [get married](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lg-launderette-of-love). How cute! This is a timely development considering [gay marriage](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rainbow-railroad) is now officially legal in the state of New York and Sesame Street is based in The Big Apple. The petition was the idea of Lair Scott, as both puppets have long been thought of as a representation of gay couples, despite the Children's Television Workshop claiming otherwise. Bert and Ernie would symbolize progress for Sesame Street, and gay culture in general. However, this is still pending on whether or not the show's producers go with this specific partnership theme. Stay tuned to find out if Bert and Ernie get hitched! ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.1/10 - Popularity: 35% | Activity: 80% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) > [Media](https://www.trendhunter.com/media) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Gay Puppet Representation:** Exploring the representation of LGBTQ+ themes through puppet characters like Bert and Ernie. - **Marriage Equality in Media:** Examining the inclusion of same-sex marriages in children's television shows like Sesame Street. - **Online Activism for LGBTQ+ Rights:** The impact of online petitions as a tool for advocating for LGBTQ+ representation and rights. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Children's Television:** Exploring how children's television programs can address diversity and inclusivity through characters and storylines. - **Entertainment and Media:** Examining the influence of LGBTQ+ representation in popular media and its impact on societal perceptions and change. - **Online Activism:** Discussing the role of online petitions and social media activism in shaping cultural norms and advocating for marginalized communities. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Trash-Centric Musical Campaigns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glad-x-sesame-street.md) - [LGBTQ+ Wedding Campaigns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/skyy-says-i-do.md) - [Pet-Inspired Proposal Initiatives](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/engaged-couples.md) - [Children's TV-Branded Cookies](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/partake-foods-x-sesame-street.md) - [Branded Free Wedding Events](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/get-married-at-serendipity3.md) - [Branded Children's Show Chocolates](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-madelaine-chocolate-co.md) - [Kid-Friendly Cartoon Bedding](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brooklinen-1.md) - [Ocean Purity Petitons](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-dirty-protest.md) - [Playful Puppet Baby Toys](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kids-preferred.md)
