# Vinyl Record Canopies Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is a Shelter in the Form of a Giant Disc By Kevin Young | Published 2012-06-03 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/serpentine-gallery-pavilion References: [itsnicethat](http://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/serpentine-gallery-summer-pavilion) & [aiweiwei](http://aiweiwei.com/) Pavilions usually have elevated roofs with intricate designs, but the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion keeps it simple and functional. Created by [Herzog & De Meuron](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/reading-nooks) and Ai Weiwei, this Swiss and Beijing-based collaboration is part of the London 2012 Festival. The rooftop of this minimal canopy holds a surface of water that floats above the lush green lawn at London's Serpentine Gallery. The eleven columns each represent the previous Serpentine Gallery structures. This structure invites people into its [hovering rooftop](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lake-house-life-experience-pavilion), creating a masked roof dwelling that's like a squirrel's den. Underneath the roof is a seating area where people can interact with [stone chairs resembling mushroom heads](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carbon-garden-pavilion). This archaeological-like structure is built with cork that lines the surfaces to offer a warm and inviting environment. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.9/10 - Popularity: 8% | Activity: 10% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Minimalist Architecture:** Opportunity to create simple and functional structures with clean designs. - **Floating Architecture:** Opportunity to design structures that incorporate floating elements. - **Archaeological-inspired Design:** Opportunity to incorporate ancient aesthetics and materials into modern designs. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Architecture:** Opportunity for architectural firms to explore new design approaches. - **Furniture:** Opportunity to create unique seating concepts that blend seamlessly with architectural designs. - **Materials and Construction:** Opportunity to innovate new materials and construction techniques for sustainable and visually appealing structures. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sculptural Timber Gathering Spaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gathering-space.md) - [Public Pavilion Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tess-pavilion.md) - [Segmented Lightflow Art Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-capsule-in-time.md) - [Pyramid-Roof Glass Greenhouses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/green-pavilion.md) - [Star-Shaped Structural Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/archipelagic-void.md) - [Illuminating Water-Based Pavillions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelter-pavilion.md) - [Community Hub Timber Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/craft-not-carbon.md) - [Mushroom-Like Wooden Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carbon-garden-pavilion.md) - [Tranquil Round Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-round-pavilion.md)
