# Self-Cleaning Fish Tanks The Avo Fish Tank Takes Care of Itself By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-10-17 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/selfcleaning-fish-tank References: [yankodesign](http://www.yankodesign.com/2014/10/17/the-best-fish-tank-ever-period/) & [noux](http://noux.co.uk/) The Avo is a [self-cleaning fish tank](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/beatbot-aquasense-x-ai-robotic-pool-cleaner) designed by Susan Shelley of Noux. A fish is probably the most low-maintenance pet you could own. They don't need to be walked or cuddled or entertained; all they ask is that you keep their tank clean and sprinkle a few fish flakes in there once a day. Simple enough. Yet the Avo makes being a fish-owner even easier than it already is by implementing a filtration system that creates an ecosystem of plants, fish and bacteria. The tank, which has been without a cleaning for the past 18 months, features a discrete cleaner, plant pods and lights that change color. The project has surpassed its [Kickstarter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/selfcleaning-litter-box1) funding goal by over ten grand with 44 days to go. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.7/10 - Popularity: 66% | Activity: 67% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Pets](https://www.trendhunter.com/pets) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Self-cleaning Fish Tanks:** The Avo fish tank uses a filtration system to create an ecosystem, minimizing the need for tank cleaning and maintenance. - **Integration of Plants, Fish, and Bacteria:** The Avo fish tank utilizes a symbiotic relationship between plants, fish, and bacteria, offering opportunities for innovative aquaponics systems. - **Smart Fish Tanks:** The Avo fish tank incorporates lights that change color, showcasing the potential for interactive and customizable aquarium experiences. ### Who This Affects Most - **Home Decor:** The self-cleaning fish tanks like Avo offer disruptive innovation opportunities in the home decor industry, combining functionality and aesthetic appeal. - **Aquarium Supplies:** The integration of plants, fish, and bacteria in innovative fish tank designs opens up new avenues for the aquarium supplies industry to develop sustainable and eco-friendly products. - **Smart Home Technology:** The Avo fish tank's smart features, such as changing lights, present opportunities for the smart home technology industry to expand into the realm of pet care and entertainment. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Air-Purifying Litter Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mova-selfcleaning-litter-box.md) - [Aquarium Cleaning Tool Scrapers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rollingreef.md) - [Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/selfcleaning-litter-box1.md) - [Automated Indoor Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-evergrow.md) - [Mindful Digital Aquariums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/reef-1.md) - [Low-Maintenance Litter Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/petsafe-smartspin.md) - [Fashionable Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/petlux.md) - [Self-Maintaining Litter Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/litterbot-pro.md) - [Modern Desk-Friendly Jellyfish Tanks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pet-jellyfish.md)
