# Rural Playground Water Pumps The 'Seesaw Well' Turns Water Sourcing into a Child's Pastime By Michael Hemsworth | Published 2017-06-08 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/seesaw-well References: [yankodesign](http://www.yankodesign.com/2017/06/07/water-clever-concept/) Taking the design of the [playground seesaw](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balance-bench) and turning it into a functional piece of equipment for rural communities, the 'Seesaw Well' is designed to offload the pumping action needed to draw water from a well to the children of the community. The conceptual design works by having a child sit on either side of the seesaw and play as they otherwise would in order to help [pump water](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/luanda-waterpoints) up into a given vessel. This would act as a way for [children to play](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/turtle-splash) and help parents or community members with the daily chores without actually feeling as though they're doing work. The 'Seesaw Well' is the design work of XueFei Liu and is the winner of the iF Design Talent Award. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.3/10 - Popularity: 41% | Activity: 49% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Playground Water-powered Innovations:** Creating functional playground equipment that harnesses children's energy for practical purposes. - **Childhood Chores Gamification:** Transforming daily tasks into engaging games for children to contribute to their communities. - **Community-engaging Sustainability:** Promoting sustainable practices by involving community members, including children, in daily tasks. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Playground Equipment Manufacturing:** Opportunities to develop innovative playground equipment that serves a practical purpose. - **Gamification and Edutainment:** Creating games and educational tools that gamify children's participation in daily chores. - **Sustainable Water Solutions:** Developing sustainable water systems that engage and empower communities to take part in water sourcing. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dual-Function Play Swings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/birddy.md) - [Heritage Sound Playgrounds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hornscape-playground.md) - [Muscle Loss-Combating Playground Benches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/playground-bench.md) - [Structural Energetic Playgrounds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/archipelago-playscape.md) - [Playground-Inspired Seating Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/swing-seat.md) - [Generational-Lasting Dynamic Playgrounds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mike-hewson-2.md) - [Fitness-Inspired Backyard Playsets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/backyard-playsets.md) - [Abstract Colorfully Vibrant Playscapes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wired-scape.md) - [Nature-Inspired Indoor Playgrounds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sarit-shani-hay.md)
