# Books as Balance Weights The See-Saw Bookshelf By Noora Abu Eitah | Published 2008-09-11 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/see-saw-bookshelf References: [bcxsy](http://www.bcxsy.com/2007/bcxsy-works/play/see-saw-bookshelf/) Designers Boaz Cohen and Sayaka Yamamoto, owners of studio BCXSY, collaborated in the design of a [See-Saw Bookshelf](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ratio-series) which uses books as weights for balancing. The shelf is made of American Walnut wood with [powder coated steel](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pli-steel-wall-shelf) holders. It’s more of a [design installation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/library-of-light) than a functional piece. I can see it in home libraries, but definitely not in busy offices. So, go ahead, grab your old school text books and finally put them to good use! ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.4/10 - Popularity: 11% | Activity: 24% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Functional Design:** Designing furniture or installations that serve both a practical and aesthetic purpose, like the See-Saw Bookshelf, can create disruptive innovation opportunities in the home decor industry. - **Sustainable Upcycling:** Using old books as weights for balancing in furniture design, as seen in the See-Saw Bookshelf, presents an opportunity for disruptive innovation in the sustainable interior design market. - **Multifunctional Objects:** Designing furniture that can serve multiple purposes, such as the See-Saw Bookshelf, offers disruptive innovation opportunities in the furniture industry by providing practical and versatile solutions. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Home Decor:** The See-Saw Bookshelf's design and incorporation of functional elements from books can disrupt the conventional home decor market and appeal to design-conscious consumers. - **Sustainable Interior Design:** Using old books as balance weights in furniture design, like the See-Saw Bookshelf, can disrupt the sustainable interior design industry by promoting upcycling and resource conservation. - **Furniture:** Developing multifunctional furniture pieces, such as the See-Saw Bookshelf, can create disruptive innovation opportunities within the furniture industry by offering unique and adaptable solutions for modern living spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dynamic Geometric Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cheft.md) - [Twisting Donut-Shaped Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hullabaloo-bookshelf.md) - [Book-Storing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookgroove-bookrack.md) - [Toy Block-Inspired Wooden Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rotating-picture-book.md) - [Versatile Book Displays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/penguin-x-moebe-book-stand.md) - [Sliding Wintery Landscape Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manhwabang-bookshelf.md) - [Minimalist Bookish Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimal-bookshelf.md) - [Minimally Engineered Bookends](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/firm-book-end.md) - [Dynamic Architecturally Strong Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dogma.md)
