# Surreal Pop Culture Collages These Pasted Pieces Make Scenarios That Look Like Science Fiction Art By Charlotte Joyce Kidd | Published 2015-10-15 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/science-fiction-art References: [boingboing.net](http://boingboing.net/2015/10/14/amazing-surreal-science-ficti.html) & [trashriotart.tumblr](http://trashriotart.tumblr.com/) [Tumblr](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tumblr-campaign) artist Trash Riot creates intense, [surreal collages](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jeffrey-deitch-art-gallery) that look like science fiction art. In the pasted-together scenes, astronauts gaze down on swimming pools filled with tiny people and sculpted angels dive down towards the surface of Earth. Using themes like exploration of outer space, popular culture and ancient mythology, Trash Riot creates complex landscapes that defy understanding. Each image seems to spark a thousand possible stories. Combining the poignantly human and the wholly supernatural, the science fiction art uses a traditional medium to create its own genre. Trash Riot's tumblr account is a treasure trove of completely unique artwork. An exploration of the science fiction art takes the viewer backward into pop culture history and outward to other planets. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.0/10 - Popularity: 70% | Activity: 11% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Surreal Collage Art:** Opportunity to disrupt the traditional art world by creating unique, mind-bending collages that combine elements of science fiction and pop culture. - **Exploration of Outer Space:** Disruptive potential to create innovative and immersive experiences that blend popular culture, space exploration, and ancient mythology. - **Blurring Realities:** Opportunity to challenge perceptions and push the boundaries of art by creating collages that seamlessly blend the human and supernatural worlds. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art:** Innovation in using traditional mediums to create surreal and visually captivating collages that appeal to a wide range of art enthusiasts. - **Entertainment:** Pioneering new forms of immersive storytelling through the fusion of science fiction, popular culture, and ancient mythology. - **Fashion:** A chance to disrupt the fashion industry with surreal collage designs that incorporate elements of science fiction and pop culture, creating unique and eye-catching apparel. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [AI-Generated Retrofuturistic Objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/retrofuturistic-objects.md) - [Digital Archetype Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/christian-rex-van-minnen-1.md) - [Retro Space-Themed Puzzled Posters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/john-carter.md) - [AI-Generated Real-World Transformations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ai-generated-world.md) - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md) - [Vibrantly Colorful Dynamic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kayla-rumpp.md) - [AI-Generated Poetic Photo Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/emilio-alarcn.md) - [Cartoonish NFT Collectibles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/i-like-you-youre-weird.md) - [Colossal AI Artworks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ai-artwork.md)
