# Backbone Bookshelves The Schiena Bookcase by Pietro Travaglini Looks like a Spinal Cord By Meghan Young | Published 2010-11-06 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/schiena-bookcase References: [yankodesign](http://www.yankodesign.com/2010/11/05/this-bookshelves-back-is-bent/) & [pietrotravaglinidesign](http://www.pietrotravaglinidesign.com/) I may not be able to envision the Schiena Bookcase in a house, but I can definitely see this piece fitting in a hospital. This Schiena Bookcase shows a strong resemblance to a human spinal cord, making it an eerily decorative piece. Designer Pietro Travaglini created this item to be flexible like its human bone counterpart, allowing maximum convenience for the placing of novels and other items. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.2/10 - Popularity: 50% | Activity: 68% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Spine-inspired Furniture:** Designers are creating furniture pieces that resemble the human spine, offering unique and decorative options for consumers. - **Flexible Storage Solutions:** Flexible furniture designs, like the Schiena Bookcase, provide convenience and adaptability for organizing and displaying items. - **Eccentric Home Decor:** Consumers are seeking out unconventional and eye-catching home decor pieces, like the Schiena Bookcase, to add personality and intrigue to their living spaces. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Furniture manufacturers can explore opportunities to create spine-inspired pieces, offering unique designs to cater to the demand for unconventional home decor. - **Home Decor Retail:** Retailers specializing in home decor can stock and promote spine-inspired furniture, capitalizing on the growing interest in eccentric and distinctive design. - **Interior Design Services:** Interior designers can incorporate flexible storage solutions, like the Schiena Bookcase, into their projects, providing clients with innovative and adaptable design options. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sculptural Bookshelves Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-bookshelf.md) - [Book-Storing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookgroove-bookrack.md) - [Shapeshifting Spine-Like Work Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spine-chair.md) - [Minimalist Bookish Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimal-bookshelf.md) - [Speaker-Inspired Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lloyd-tex.md) - [Twisting CGI-Designed Sideboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookscrew-sideboard.md) - [Dynamic Architecturally Strong Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dogma.md) - [Sliding Wintery Landscape Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manhwabang-bookshelf.md) - [Abstract Jigsaw-Like Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spectator-shelf.md)
