# Intricate Illusory Shelving Units The Scatter Shelf by Nendo is Awesomely Confusing By Souzan Michael | Published 2011-08-26 | Updated 2011-08-30 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/scatter-shelf-by-nendo References: [notcot.org](http://www.notcot.org/post/42625/) & [nendo.jp](http://www.nendo.jp/en/works/detail.php?g=furniture&t=221) If you've been thinking about switching up your home decor and are looking for something unique and modern, look no further than the Scatter Shelf by [Nendo](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/invisible-snow-globe). The shelf is made of 5mm black acrylic shelves arranged in a grid form, stacked in three layers and somewhat displaced, resulting in a super-sturdy [shelving unit](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelving-unit-01) that also looks incredible. When viewed from the front, the objects placed on the Scatter Shelf by Nendo appear to be caught in a tangled web rather than being simply placed on a shelf. What's more is that, according to the Nendo website, "When viewed on an angle, the [glossy acrylic](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/awt-bar) face creates a series of reflections within the shelves, making the ‘opaque’ acrylic appear to be transparent." The reflections of the shelves also make whatever or whoever happens to be behind the unit appear scattered and shattered. If this doesn't scream modern and mind-blowing, then I don't know what does. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.5/10 - Popularity: 62% | Activity: 64% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Illusory Shelving:** Designing shelving units that create optical illusions presents an opportunity for a disruptive innovation in the home decor industry. - **Grid Form:** Exploring the use of grid formations in furniture design offers a disruptive innovation opportunity in the interior design industry. - **Reflection Effects:** Using reflection effects in product design can present a disruptive innovation opportunity in the furniture manufacturing industry. ### Who This Affects Most - **Home Decor:** Integration of illusory shelving units can disrupt the home decor industry by offering unique and modern design options. - **Interior Design:** Incorporating grid form structures in furniture design can disrupt the interior design industry by providing visually striking and functionally unique pieces. - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Leveraging reflection effects in product design can disrupt the furniture manufacturing industry by creating innovative and visually captivating pieces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dynamic Storage-Display Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelf-life.md) - [Room-Dividing Bookshelf Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frquence-shelf.md) - [Modular Grid-Style Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bend-shelf-by-spenser-atlas.md) - [Twisting Donut-Shaped Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hullabaloo-bookshelf.md) - [Sculptural Bookshelves Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-bookshelf.md) - [Jigsaw Puzzle-Inspired Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/puzzle-shelf.md) - [Modular Configuration Shelving Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/repisa-01.md) - [Japanese Woodwork-Inspired Shelving Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/altitude-shelving.md) - [Offset Shelf Sideboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crazy-slice-sideboard-concept.md)
