# Frightening Surreal Art Troy Coulterman's Scary Art Series Plays with the Human Form By Lacey-Jane Walsh | Published 2013-05-31 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/scary-art References: [juxtapoz](http://www.juxtapoz.com/current/surreal-sculptures-by-troy-coulterman) & [whokilledbambi](http://www.whokilledbambi.co.uk/2013/05/troy-coulterman/) This [scary art series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/light-into-darkness) by Canadian Troy Coulterman puts a bizarre twist on the human form. These eerily contorted sculptures depict people with nightmarish growths or strangely distorted bodies. One of these terrifying sculptures portrays a faceless woman. It almost looks like there is a black hole opening up where her face used to be that sucked it inward. Another of these peculiar [human based sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hughmanity) features the face of a man that seems to have been swallowed up by a large thumb. This is neat because a thumbprint is all that's really needed to identify someone and this mustached man's identity seems to have swallowed him whole. Lastly, there is a sculpture of a man who has a gigantic brain covering up most of his upper body. It almost looks like this mammoth brain hopped on for a piggy-back ride. These intriguing [surreal sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1) are chilling and thought-provoking. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.5/10 - Popularity: 74% | Activity: 52% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Surreal Sculptures:** Surrealist sculptures with bizarre twists on the human form. - **Body Horror Art:** Art that evokes horror through distorted and mutated depictions of the human form. - **Identity Distortion Art:** Art that explores the concept of identity by distorting or obscuring recognizable features of the human form. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Contemporary Art:** Contemporary art industry should embrace more surrealism and body horror to intrigue audiences. - **Horror Entertainment:** Horror entertainment industry can explore new ways of evoking fear through body horror art. - **Psychology Research:** Psychology research industry could analyze the impact of identity distortion art on behavior and perception. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md) - [Surreal Love-Themed Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/joakim-ojanen.md) - [Human Embraced-Inspired Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wallmounted-sculpture.md) - [Human Torso-Inspired Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lene-bdker.md) - [Surreal Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jeffrey-deitch-art-gallery.md) - [Hyper-Realistic Flesh Objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/junji-ito.md) - [Artful Anime-Blending Split Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/split-bust.md) - [Sculpturally Formed Jewelry Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cyber-zombie.md) - [Insect-Inspired Bronze Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/insect-bronze-sculptures.md)
