As a piece of architectural art, Santa Monica Linear required the American artist to team up with engineering firm Skidmore Owings and Merril to sculpt. Smith's Santa Monica Linear sculpture is made of steel and glass and sits horizontally, capturing views of Santa Monica's landscape with its 30-foot-long [reflective surface](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mirroring-dialogue). During the day, the Santa Monica Linear sculpture reflects the sky and its surrounding trees. By nightfall, Santa Monica Linear's mirrored surface is transformed into an exhilarating [LED light display](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shen-sculpture). The LED's in Smith's Santa Monica Linear sculpture are meant to mimic the notable Santa Monica beachfront sunsets.
